Tip:
Highlight text to annotate it
X
okay in this video we're going to be
making couple graphs in Adobe Illustrator
and will be making them dynamic
using the variables feature
in Illustrator and
show you how you can make several
charts without having to do each one individually
OK I'm gonna go ahead and click on it data set here
here
we have current employment
surveys data for
Wyoming I wanna go further back
months that they just have here so gonna click on this
back data dinosaur and you can see this for natural resources and mining
I'm gonna highlight that
right click and copy for some reason
doesn't work to just pastit directly into illustrators
gonna go through Microsoft Excel
just paste it in there now copy
this data
going into
illustrator. In illustrator you have this
graphing tool, right now set for column graph you can set it for
the type of graph to use going to keep it K
brings up your data
input dialog box and
paste data in there
OK one thing we have to do here
is we have to change this. It thinks these years are
numbers and they're actually strings (text) so
we have to put double quotes around those
there may be a faster way I'm not sure
probably the most time-consuming part of
this whole project
and one more.
okay we click OK to apply it
there's our column chart
Close that.
and since this is hanging off the pasteboard,
or hanging off the document I'm going to put this up a little bit higher
these are all running together
see so gonna do is highlight the graph again and
come up here and change that 14pt to 12
well K
looks a little better yeah it's fine for now
and OK
we need some text to go along with that, so we go back to our Excel file
here
and copy that
back into
illustrator clicks
we don't have anything selected and paste comes up in a different font so
what I want to do
get rid this clipping path
and I don't need
the supersector for each these
So I am just going to delete that
this
like okay
now see
this is what's going to change from one graft to another this is part of what's going to
change
so I'll highlight that
and I need to get rid of these variables here
that was from something I did earlier
Now we want to create variable here
We want to make that text dynamic, so we click
And we want to make the graph dynamic,
now we have to capture that dataset you can leave it as is or you can rename it
I'm gonna rename it natural resources and mining, just so I know what it is,
OK
Now I can go back to our
dataset, get another one
next one down would be construction
see that brought up the construction data
copy that
paste it into a blank worksheet in Excel
this time around
don't have to do quite so much
because we've already done
just copy num the data
itself and go into
illustrator, and bring up the data input dialog
and paste the new numbers in there click
apply. You can see that changed our graph now
something it also did is it made this italic. That's kind of
an indicator to us that something's changed
We want to change this
natural resources and mining we're working with; this is construction
up
OK and we'll
capture this dataset and we'll call that construction
okay now if we click back we see
the label is changed as well as the graph
one thing we need to do
need to go back days and
see how it in but these double
quotes around is text within
the cell
get rid of that
well click OK if you watch
right here you see another line
here and that's our data for December
most recent OK
and its not gonna let me do that
I shoulda done that before captured the data set, I think
okay
it's gonna capture that as a separate data set
changed okay now
anyway you get the point and another thing you can do
in here like if I wanted to change
something in here just September 1
I wanted to make those all red you could do that (((using the group selector tool -- white arrow with the plus)))
just click
It's not real, real easy to see, but it did make all those September 1's red
and when I click
on natural resources and mining
its applied throughout all
all of the graphs we're using
that's about it hopefully that helps
here learning how to make graphs in Illustrator
