I'm Doctor Unni Krishnan, Head of Disaster Preparedness and Response
Plan International and we are currently responding to the
crisis in Sahal region including Burkina Faso.
This is absolutely a forgotten crisis because more than
18 million people are affected and the world seems to be
ignoring this completely because it's not in the media and it is not on the
radar
of the donor nations. There are multiple disasters
that are unfolding at the same time. One. This region
Sahal, in West Africa is going through perhaps the worst food crisis
in living memory. Add to this the political crisis in Mali
that has resulted in large number of people being displaced within Mali
and a lot of them leaving the country as ending up as refugees in Burkina
Faso
as well as Niger, we are stretched over limits. The world needs to step up their
support for
the crisis that's unfolding here.
This crisis
is becoming complicated with each passing day.In Burkina Faso, we have seen
a number of refugees increasing in the places where we are working
until and unless there is a solution to the political crisis in Mali
the situation is likely to remain very dynamic which can lead to
more people crossing over the borders. That means
we need to be preparing for the worst case scenarios and
working with assumptions that the situation is likely to deteriorate in the
coming days.
