Hello friends, my name is Gray, and I am running to be the Vice President Activities in the
Leeds Metropolitan Students' Union.
For those of you watching this video, you're probably going to get a little confused as
it's not going to be in English: it's going to be in Malay language. So if you're on your
laptops, switch on the captions which should be right here in English, or look in the description
below, where I will provide a transcript, as well as a translated transcript. So here we go.
You might be asking, do I not wish to return to Malaysia? Do I not want to work in my home
country? I say of course, I love my country, but this is a campaign I feel I must participate
in; even if it will keep me here in the UK for another year.
I am one of the "Supreme Councillor" in the UK, a council of Malaysian student societies
in the UK. When at a UKEC conference, I told my friends: We must be more active in our
respective students' unions: Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, London, etc.
Why? They ask.
In the UK, we are merely one of the many students in the universities of this country. A student
of the students' union.
The primary reason I entered this campaign was to be an example to my fellow Malaysian
students. This isn't just to brag. Look at our own country: Malaysia. We do not have
students' unions. I ask why? I am told, it is because of politics.
I admit I am not well versed in the reasons of why we do not have students' unions. But
while in the UK I have benefited greatly from joining societies, campaigning, volunteering,
listening, watching the issues, and news of my city, this country, and the world.
I have matured, and realized my place in the world. My fellow Malaysian students, look
at what I can achieve.
If you have friends in Leeds Met, ask them to vote for me. Go to http://www.vote.leedsmetsu.co.uk
from Tuesday till Thursday, 25th February till 27th February and vote for me: Gray Ham,
menjadi "Vice President Activities". Bye!
