According to the National Cancer Institute, cervical cancer is curable if caught early.
Treatment usually involves surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. WeÕll talk about the main
options here, but only your doctor and oncologist can know whatÕs best for you. Sometimes,
a combination of two or more therapies may be recommended to treat your cancer.
There are a number of surgery options available. In early stage cancers, laser surgery or cryosurgery
may be used to kill and remove cancer cells with heat or cold.
During Conization your doctor will remove a cone shape sample of the ***. This can
be used to test for the presence of cancer, or if the cancer is smallÉ remove it all
together. Finally, if the cancer has start to spread,
a hysterectomy can be performed to remove the uterus and ***.
Radiation therapy is used to kill cancer cells, or shrink the size of a cancer growth. During
this therapy, strong x-rays or beams of other high energy radiation are directed to the
area affected by the cancer. Finally, Chemotherapy treatments use drugs
to kill cancer cells. These therapies affect the entire body, and not just the area where
the cancer is. They do cause side effects, but they are very successful in treating cancer.
Cervical cancer can be a scary diagnosis, but the disease can be treated É especially
if itÕs caught early. For peace of mind alone, itÕs important to get tested regularly, know
how to protect yourself from HPV, and understand your treatment options.
HOST: HPV is a common virus, but itÕs important to take the right steps to prevent and treat
it because of its link to cancer. Talk to your doctor about scheduling routine check-ups
and stick with them. ItÕs one of the best things you can do for yourself.
