Welcome to WIRE. We'll brief the local and international news of the week so that you
can be more informed during your busy schedule.
Gas prices have shot up and the price of gas in California is the highest it's been at
this time of year. Just this week, the price of gas has increased by 12 cents, and according
to Triple A, reached a nation-wide average of 3 dollars and 6 cents. Some stations have
already reached prices over 5 dollars per gallon. After 17 days of consecutive increases,
speculations have developed regarding the increases. Reasons suspected for the rising
cost of gas include stocks and unrest in Iran.
The nation-wide acceptance of gay marriage is growing. On Thursday, the Maryland Senate
voted to legalize same-sex marriage. The bill was approved last week, and the governor of
Maryland, Martin O'Malley, is expected to sign the bill into law. The good news for
same sex couples follows two weeks after the Washington state legislators voted to legalize
same-sex marriage, which will likely take effect in the summer, if passed.
On Friday, 12 people were killed and 50 people were wounded in Afghanistan during protests
over the burning of copies of the Quran at a NATO base. 2 of the people killed were US
soldiers. President Obama issued a written apology, on behalf of the US military, for
accidentally burning the Qurans and other Islamic texts. The U.S.-led military coalition
says the Muslim holy books were sent by mistake on February 19th to a garbage burning pit at
Bagram Air Field near the capital, and that the case is under investigation.
