International students from all over the world
love coming to Australian beaches
but it's absolutely critical that they understand how to
play safe and have a great time at the same time.
The main reason to have the students here today
is to actually learn beach and water safety.
Today the students have taken part in a number of
activities on the beach, organised in collaboration
with the Grange Surf Lifesaving Club.
They have taken part in relays on the beach, running between the flags
pretend rescues, behind me you can see the students
also taking part in some beach paddling
and they will also take part in beach cricket.
What do you think of the Grange beach in Adelaide?
- It's very nice. - Very beautiful.
- The sand is nice.
And where are you from?
- Singapore. - Singapore. - Canada.
- Quebec. - I'm from Colorado.
- Actually we've got snow back home, so no beaches.
Not much coast?
- Not in Colorado. -No, neither in Quebec.
We've actually had a large group of students here today that haven't experienced
or come from areas where they're not as prone to the water
and they're not actually as prone as to the
awareness of water danger and water safety
so it's been a really critical part about today.
So yes, we want them to experience the fun element of surf lifesaving
and beach safety but we actually want them to actually have
some education around that as well.
You're down at the beach today, what have you learnt so far?
Maybe like how to paddle on those things.
Learned out on the paddle boards, how to stand on your knees.
And how to rescue someone probably.
That's really handy when you come down to the beach, to rescue girls.
Yeah, really useful, yeah. Probably the most useful thing we've learnt today.
In terms of the activities you've learnt today, do you feel any safer about coming down to the beach?
- Definitely. - Yes.
And what had you heard about Australian beaches?
I heard they're nice.
- And sharks. - Sharks.
And are you less worried about the sharks?
No.
The students will be able to have fun and get to know each other
learn about Australia, learn about each other
and make friends before they settle down to studies
which will commence in [ February ].
And will you come down again?
Definitely!
