Welcome to the 7th video tutorial in the Read&Write Gold v.11 series:
Spell Checking and Dictionary Features (Part 2)
Throughout this series of instructional videos, you'll learn how to use Read&Write Gold to
assist you with your reading, writing, studying, research and organization. This video series
has been created to help you become more familiar with all of the main aspects of the program.
In this video, I will look at the following objectives:
1. How to use the Basic Dictionary 2. How to use the Advanced Dictionary
3. How to use the Web Dictionary 4. How to use the Picture Dictionary
Before we get started, you should already have the Read&Write Toolbar loaded and set
to the Writing Toolbar for consistency. You can do this by clicking the textHELP logo
repeatedly until the correct tool bar appears. Or you can do this by clicking the little
white arrow next to the right of the textHELP button like this and then moving your cursor
to "Current Toolbar", and then selecting "Writing Features".
Once you have this setup, we can begin.
1. How to use the Basic Dictionary In this exercise you will learn how to use
the dictionary feature to find basic definitions. The first thing you need to do is type the
following text into a Microsoft Word document. The next thing you need to do is set up the
dictionary feature so that it is only looking for basic definitions. You do this by clicking
on the little white arrow to the right of the dictionary feature and then selecting
"Basic Definitions".
Now highlight the word "earth" in your document and then click on the Dictionary button.
You will notice that a new window appears containing basic definitions for the word
"earth". You can listen to the definitions by clicking on them with your mouse and then
pressing the PLAY button like this... [TTS: The planet that we live on, Earth is very
pretty from space.]
You will also notice that (when applicable) you can also view the definition of the word
as a Noun, a Verb, Adjective or Adverb.
Close the window when you are done.
2. How to use the Advanced Dictionary If you use more complex words then you may
prefer to use the advanced dictionary. The advanced dictionary is a lot more useful for
postsecondary students. This is how it works. You need to set up the dictionary features
so that it is now looking for advanced definitions. You do this by clicking on the little white
arrow to the right of the dictionary button and then selecting "Advanced Definitions".
Now highlight the word "earth" in your document and then click on the Dictionary button.
You will now notice that when the dictionary window opens, there are many more advanced
definitions of the word "earth" along with additional information.
In addition to looking at the word as a noun or a verb, you also have the option to see
opposites of the selected word, different kinds of the selected word like a thesaurus,
other words related to the selected word and other options by clicking on the Advanced
button here.
To make a quick change to your document, click on one of the definitions, and then look at
the list to the right of it. You will see a list of words in the inflections/synonyms
list box. Click on one of the words to best replace the word "earth", such as "world".
If you click on the Change button here, you will notice that the word "earth" is replaced
by "world".
Close the window when you are done.
3. How to use the Web Dictionary In this exercise you will learn how to use
Read&Write GOLD to find definitions on the Internet. To do this, you need to adjust the
dictionary settings once again. Click on the little white arrow to the right of the dictionary
button and then select "Web Definitions".
Highlight the word "world" in your text. Click on the Dictionary button and you will notice
that instead of seeing the definition box that you saw in the previous examples, you
are now presented with dozens of definitions for your word from a variety of web-based
sources.
If you want to use Read&Write GOLD to listen to these definitions, the quickest and easiest
way would be to turn on the "Read the Web" feature by clicking on the little white arrow
next to the PLAY button and then highlighting "read the web" like this...
[TTS: The earth, together with all of its countries, peoples, and natural features]
Close the window when you are done.
4. How to use the Picture Dictionary In this exercise you will learn how to use
the Picture Dictionary to find a graphical representation of specific words. Note: you
must be online in order to use the Picture Dictionary feature.
To activate the picture dictionary, click on the picture dictionary icon like this.
Now select the word by double-clicking it with your mouse. For this example I am using
the word "world". You will see a graphical representation of the word "world" in the
picture box along with a hyperlink that connects you to the Web definitions of the word. The
Picture Dictionary will use whichever dictionary you have currently selected from the drop-down
list. In this case, it is using the web definitions.
Close the windows when you are done.
This concludes video number seven, Spell Checking and Dictionary Features (Part 2) within Read&Write
GOLD v.11.
