>>COLIN HITCHENS: My name is Colin Hitchins and I live in Mayfair Road Darlington.
I am a Street Champion. And I’d like to support what the work that’s being done
by the Street Champions and Street Scene.
I’m getting my neighbours involved in doing litter picks and I work closely with Councillor
Burton and we go out quite often dealing with the litter but we need to get our local neighbours
getting involved with this on a one to one basis they need to get out and take pride
in their community and pick litter up wherever they find it basically.
>>IAN THOMPSON - ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES: Street Champions is a relatively
new initiative and to date we have got about 120 Street Champions’ across the borough.
They are really Street Scenes eyes and ears on the ground in their local area or their
local street helping us by reporting in issues before they become a problem.
You can become a Street Champion by contacting us on (01325) 388777, the standard Street
Scene number, and then someone will be in touch.
The best way I can describe Street Champions is an environmental version of Neighbourhood
Watch being out there assisting us with litter, dog fouling, recycling and so on. It’s a
good thing for people to become involved in and the more Street Champions we can get the
better.
