One of the greatest benefits of your military service is your leave.
30 days of paid vacation every year.
Now, as you transition out of the military, you need to be judicious with the leave
you've saved.
If you just returned from a deployment, you could be sitting on up to 90 days.
As you look for a new job, don’t be in a rush to sell it back.
As you get ready to get out,
having leave on the books is a good thing. It can help you cover the cost
while you're looking for another job, and remember, when you get out and have
that leave that’s pay and full benefits including housing allowances and so on.
If you sell it you're only going to get your base pay.
And as you may have noticed with bonuses before, selling leave counts as
a one-time entitlement.
As such, it’s taxed at a higher rate.
That means fewer dollars in your pocket.
You can learn more about transitioning to civilian life in the book
“The Military Advantage.” For USAA, I’m Gary Quesenberry.
