Ok Kelly, so can you tell me a bit more about Bloomsbury...
...or the Bloomsbury group, as I've heard lots of the relationships are quite unusual
I can, they were quite unusual. They were people who studied together...
...they were friends and they had countless affairs; they married each other.
For example Duncan Grant, who we're looking at here. He had an affair with Vanessa Bell,
who was married to a critic of bloomsbury, Clive Bell.
They never divorced, they had an open marriage.
But in 1916, they moved from London down to Charleston, which is just outside of Lewes - very near here.
So is it Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant that moved?
It was Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Duncan's gay lover at the time,
So that would be David 'Bunny' Garnett. So they all lived there together with their two children by Clive
And in 1918, she and Duncan had a child, a daughter, Angelica together.
Although, Duncan wasn't very interested in being a father; so Angelica was raised actually as Clive's daughter;
Rather than Duncan's and she never knew.
Ok and did anything happen to her when she grew up, I think, isn't there something that a bit..?
Yes, there is something that's a bit funny. No one told her that Duncan Grant was her father,
So when she in her twenties, she actually went on to marry David Garnett, who had been her father's lover.
He's actuallty present at her birth and remarked at the time in the correspondence,
That he was thinking of marrying her. Wouldn't it be scandalous!
That's pretty bizarre!
It is pretty bizarre.
