If you pay for school supplies, tuition or other education expenses, a set of state tax
deductions could save you money. They're called The Louisiana School Tuition
& Expense Deductions and the Louisiana Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers to keep track
of what they spend on kids' education. Along with tuition, you may deduct a variety of
education expenses, like school uniforms, textbooks, and other materials if they're
required by the school. For school supplies and expenses in tax year
2011 and after, the deduction is for 50 percent of the costs paid per student, limited to
$5,000, whether the student attends private or public school, or is home schooled.
If your student is enrolled in a nonpublic school, the tuition deduction applies to all
actual costs paid, up to $5,000 per depdenent. To claim these deductions, you must be able
to claim the student as a dependent on your Louisiana individual income tax return. A
tax deduction like this can lower the amount of your taxable income and lower your tax
bill. That could mean a bigger refund come tax time.
Report the deduction on Schedule E of the Louisiana Resident Income Tax Return, Form
IT-540, as an adjustment to income. The School Expense Deduction Worksheet must be attached
to your return. For tax forms and more information, visit
