NARRATOR: Thank you for your interest
in the Master of Science Program
in Secondary Education of Students
who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
at RIT's National Technical
Institute for the Deaf.
MSSE is an exciting program designed to meet
the national need for preparing deaf, hard of hearing
and hearing teachers
in the field of secondary education
of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
I chose the RIT's MSSE program because RIT provides something
that other deaf education programs do not--
a diverse campus community.
In the MSSE program, you are able to interact
with both deaf and hearing people on the same campus.
NARRATOR: As a graduate of the MSSE program,
you will be eligible to be dually certified
to teach an academic content area, such as...
or American Sign Language in grades 7 through 12
and also to teach deaf or hard of hearing students
in grades K through 12.
While the program prepares teachers in a variety of fields,
it places special emphasis on those preparing to teach
in the fields of science and mathematics.
It's really hard to pinpoint why I like the MSSE program.
There are many, many different reasons.
Besides the friendships that will last a lifetime,
I love that we have the opportunity
to go almost anywhere in the U.S.
for our student-teaching internship.
What I like most about the MSSE program
are the dynamic relationships between students and professors.
Professors have different qualities,
which make the faculty diverse.
They're very approachable.
I can talk with them about my classwork
or what I did on the weekend.
NARRATOR: Our MSSE program provides personal attention
from program faculty members,
a variety of student-teaching placement options,
close proximity to schools for the deaf and mainstream programs
and exposure to a vibrant deaf community
in Rochester, New York.
ADANTI: Formerly I taught special education
and enjoyed it, but six years ago
when I came here to teach Deaf Education, I loved it.
I love seeing students who arrive here with no language
progress in just three short years
to being able to fully express themselves
and break down any communication barriers that they had.
It's an amazing thing to witness a student grow
and develop the ability to express themselves
and to learn.
NARRATOR: The program provides opportunities
for graduate assistantships
where students can work as tutors,
teaching and research assistants.
COHEN: I love the MSSE program.
Around here, there is a very strong deaf community.
It's good for exposure.
Teaching experiences can last 16 weeks,
and that interaction has really improved my skills.
Also, here I have the opportunity
to be a graduate assistant.
That helps me develop my experience,
plus I can earn money to support myself.
It was important for me to learn
through a deaf education program.
It helped me to be a better teacher.
It's important to go into a deaf education program
with an open mind, ready to take everything in.
You need to be open to learning about the plethora of changes,
including advances in technology that are present
in today's dynamic world.
We appreciate your interest in the MSSE program.
You won't find another university in the world
with faculty and staff members more committed
to helping you succeed than those of us here at RIT.
