ERIC FERRE: I work down at Seaport Steele. I run a crane down there.
I remove steel from off and on a cutting table. I was setting a plate down on the table when
my finger got squished between a piece of wood and the plate. It hurt.
FERN SHUMWAY: When Eric Ferre's was injured on the job it was in a swing shift, so his
lead called and evaluated Eric's condition. ERIC: After taking a few looks at it we decided
it would probably be best to have it looked out by a doctor.
It ended up being a good thing, because it required stitches.
FERN SHUMWAY: Stay at Work is a great service that is offered from the state.
We have always been proactive in about making sure our employees have gotten back.
It's just a nice benefit because were able to take people like Eric who is at 50 percent
duty. He now has somebody he can train.
ERIC: When one of us misses work it affects everybody because we all have our jobs our
duties. DR HOFFMAN: Fern and I worked through the
Activity Prescription form and the Recommended Restrictions, and she had a Job Description
for me to sign. And we were able to keep him at work so that
he could be productive and stay engaged in his work community.
ERIC: If I had to stay home for more than a few days I would have been hurt financially
for one. And I'm just not the type of person who
does well sitting at home. RECEPTIONIST: Grab a seat and he'll be with
you in a few minutes. ERIC: Okay thanks.
DR HOFFMAN: Injured workers do the best when they are seen on the day of injury if at all
possible. When their paperwork is completed including
the activity prescription form and the alternative job description.
When they get into therapy promptly. When their followed up with regularly and
when the expectations are set at the beginning of the case.
We care about you, we want you to be completely healthy, you're going to be involved in
your own health care too, and we're all going to work as a team for the best possible
outcome. ERIC: If you can get somebody to a moderate
duty back to work, it definitely benefits the employer and employee, because he's
getting his full pay, his family getting food on the table, and the employer doesn't have
to deal with L&I much. FERN SHUMWAY: The claim is closed within two
and half weeks. With the Stay at Work program everybody is
in it together. We all win because we all support each other.
The worker still has his job, he's not concerned about his job.
The employer knows that his employees are taken care of.
They're not worried about the employee. The doctors are happy with the Stay at Work
program as far as I know because we work together. DR HOFFMAN: It's easy; it doesn't make
a whole lot of extra work for the provider and its fine.
We are working together to do in what is in the best interest of everyone.
I feel like a close relationship with an employer and an employee sets the stage for a better
outcome.
