Look out, Vegas. Here comes "Yard Crashers."
NARRATOR: Licensed contractor Matt Blashaw is crashing Las Vegas.
Bring it on, Vegas.
NARRATOR: He's going to change someone's luck
by changing their lousy backyard.
[ Gasps ] My backyard.
The lucky homeowner who hits the "Yard Crashers" jackpot
will get a new rustic-retreat backyard
with a water feature...
privacy wall made of pallets...
a custom dining table...
fire pit party seating...
designer artwork...
and tons more.
Yes.
I'm so excited.
You want to take me home?
Professional contractor Matt Blashaw
stakes out home-improvement stores...
I'm giving away gold.
...looking for do-it-yourselfers
I don't know.
What they don't know is he's gonna transform
their simple project into a total backyard makeover.
WOMAN: It's amazing.
It's like winning the landscape lottery.
Yes!

No.
[ Groans ]
We haven't called a contractor yet.
Well, you know why? 'Cause they're shady.
You have the glasses on,
hoping that I wouldn't talk to you.
And it's not working.
You looking for any help?
Want to babysit?
That sounds like a blast. [ Chuckling ] Sign me up.
I go to Vegas to babysit.
Yeah.
By myself.
Are you a contractor?
What contractor? I got Google.
Okay.
So, what are you guys doing?
Building a keg washer. Home brewers.
Yes.
Yeah.
Might turn into a week show,
Yeah, yeah.
And what is on the shopping list today?
I'm looking for a light bulb for my patio.
A light bulb?
What are you shining a light on in your backyard? Anything?
No. It's just rocks right now.
Do you spend some time in your backyard?
I love to entertain,
but I don't have any place to do it in my backyard.
Taryn.
Yeah.
You're a showgirl?
Nice! Ah, yes!
Okay.
All right?
Yes. It's just how I roll.
I'm looking for backyards that can use some help.
Yes.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
Yes. Yes.
You redesign somebody's backyard.
Yes.
I'm thinking you may want that.
All right.
Do you need to ask me any other questions?
No. [ Laughs ]
You sure?
Yes.
Yes!
Bye.
Okay. You are bouncy.
[ Laughs ]
Yes!
Okay. Go.
But not too fast. Wait for me.
Whoa, whoa. Hey, hey. Slow down.
I'm gonna have to get some more energy to keep up with this one.
Welcome home.
Nice.
Oh.
I don't know the code for that.
[ Chuckles ]
I do.
We get to go see
what a bachelorette's house looks like.
Let's go.
Nice.
What's that for?
Come push.
Ready?
[ Both laugh ]
Oh, this was my birthday present from my neighbor.
[ Laughs ]
There's even more back there.
Yes.
Yes.
I got to see it for myself.
TARYN: You can make a swing out of pallets.
This is gonna be the best yard ever.
To have a swing. [ Chuckles ]
I'm writing that down.
So, my biggest issue is the street.
MATT: That's a major...
It's a lot of car traffic comes by, yeah.
Major intersection.
I really don't like to see all of my neighbors.
So, privacy -- huge issue.
Although, do you tan back here?
It would be nice.
How hot does it get back here?
120 degrees.
Yes.
The stone came with the house.
MATT: Not the color.
I think we need a larger patio.
So we can have a table.
I'd love to be able to sit down and have dinner out here.
I love to cook.
What's your favorite thing to cook?
Steak.
A dancer that eats steak?
And still stays in shape.
[ Chuckles ]
You just get better by the sentence.
[ Chuckles ]
Most of my colors are cooler tones --
greens, purples, blues.
Peacock feather. Those are the colors.
Imagine a peacock...
Yeah, imagine a peacock.
...explodes in this backyard.
Yes.
This is what I need from you.
Bring me, like, 8 to 10 friends.
Okay.
Am I gonna get all dancers?
[ Laughs ]
Whoo!
Like, it's really happening?
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Hold this.
I'm just gonna let myself out.
Yes, I'm coming back.
Bye.
Bye.
Oh, my gosh, it's really happening.
Imagine -- that's one --
how much energy 10 in the backyard's gonna be?
[ Horn honks ]
[ All cheering ]
[ Laughs ]
Whoo-hoo!
You guys going? You ready?
All right.
So, who's the best friend?
How you doing? What's your name?
Laura.
Yes!
This man right here -- this is Damon Lang.
He is from Green Planet Landscaping.
Next to him, that is Jim Donofrio
from Trident Construction.
And then right next to him, that is Derek from Got Shade.
[ Cheering ]
Let's go! Everyone to the back!
Come on! Let's go!
Okay, here we are!
[ Laughs ]
Aah!
Oh, my gosh!
Oh, my God!
NARRATOR: Matt's design is all about Taryn's love of pallets,
starting with a privacy wall made of pallets,
complete with water feature
and a dining table made of -- you guessed it -- pallets,
a new travertine patio and a cool art piece --
yep -- from more pallets.
And then a shade sail right there.
She'll get a storage island made of pallets
and benches from what else but pallets,
all surrounding a fire pit.
Feels good.
[ Cheering ]
All the stone, all the rock needs to go out. Let's go.
Let's do it!
Oh, my gosh.
Someone hands me a jackhammer, I go to town.
And it's just shaking my arms.
I totally got this.
I'm gonna put you on the cover of Jackhammer Monthly.
Oh, you're like a forklift.
Load up the Bobcat.
We carry around 15-pound headdresses. This is nothing.
There's like eight of those on your head at one time.
Take that out.
Nice work!
NARRATOR: Coming up, a huge travertine patio transforms the yard...
[ Chuckles ]
No more.
...a paint-by-number mural on pallets...
My gosh, you guys, let's do it.
NARRATOR: ...and Taryn faces her fear of power tools.
Aah!
Aah!
Viva Las Vegas.
NARRATOR: Matt Blashaw is crashing Las Vegas.
NARRATOR: He picked up Taryn...
You're a showgirl? Nice!
...and went home to see her barren and hot backyard.
How hot does it get back here?
120 degrees.
So Matt decided the crash was on
and was greeted
by all of Taryn's excited showgirl friends.
And since Taryn loves pallets,
Matt brought lots and lots of pallets.
As the crew starts grading for the new patio,
four steel posts for the shade structure are installed,
and a new 8-foot-high privacy wall gets started
with posts set in concrete and 2x6 backing.
We're just gonna finish up this backing,
and then we're gonna start stacking pallets on the outside.
Both sides, and we're gonna try to offset them
so that they can't see through.
We got them colored, so you just keep going.
We'll bring them back.
Taryn's friends tackle the privacy-wall-staining duty
as she and Matt start their first project together.
You and I, my dear, are going to make a pallet table.
Okay.
But, you ask, why do I have metal in my hand?
[ Chuckles ]
Pallet is gonna be the top,
and then we're gonna do these rebar legs.
The first step --
Aah!
We're gonna cut this part right here.
Aah!
Aah!
We have a grinder that cuts the rebar,
and sparks just fly everywhere.
Aah!
I don't like it!
[ Laughing ] I don't like it!
You did it! Nothing's on fire!
Yeah!
Now we are going to weld.
I thought to myself, "What's welding?"
This is the most fashionable thing that you can wear.
[ Muffled ] I can't see.
Exactly.
So we're gonna go like this.
[ Laughs ]
Whoa.
See that?
Just a little spot weld right there.
That's it.
Go.
You're done.
I'm done?
Nailed it.
It was basically like using a hot-glue gun with metal.
NARRATOR: Next, they tack-weld a series of uprights and additional rings
to form the base for the table.
It's pretty awesome to use a welder.
Good?
This is beautiful.
So, now we got our column.
So, we got to make another one of these.
From one, two, and then we make our pallet table.
You actually look good in that.
Give me a showgirl walk.
[ Laughs ]
TARYN: Uh...
Bigger in the hips.
There you go.
Jimmy, am I pretty?
[ Laughs ]
NARRATOR: Now it's time for Laura and Damon
to get down and dirty on the new patio.
LAURA: Damon and I have been working,
putting down our beautiful paver patio
with the travertine tiles,
and the patio's taking up a lot of space,
so I hope we're gonna have a lot of beautiful furniture
to go on this patio.
NARRATOR: With the table bases complete, Matt and Taryn take over
building the pallet tabletop that Jim started.
You and I are gonna make a little ridge, okay?
'Cause the acrylic, when it goes on top,
It's thicker.
So, we just got to have a little ridge come up
so it doesn't roll off the table.
You ready to do it?
Great.
They take measurements,
set a chop saw to 45 degrees,
and miter-cut 1x3 lumber for the table edge.
Just like that.
Finish nailer.
You do the firing. I'll do the hold.
Yep.
Turn it sideways and then just sink it.
Boom, and now you've bonded the two together.
They stain the top using a whitewash technique.
Now, in this hot Vegas sun,
Wipe.
Let's flip it.
Down.
Then they screw on the two metal bases.
I have a table.
And now you can say what a lot of people can't say,
I did it myself.
..."I welded that." [ Chuckles ]
Nice work.
Electric lines and a catch basin for a new water feature
are built into the privacy wall,
and the crew jumps in and are making progress
on the huge travertine patio.
Aah! Plants!
And Taryn's excitement continues with Matt's next surprise.
Oh, my gosh! It's like a plant wall.
MATT: [ Chuckling ] Yes.
I got it. Don't you worry.
Ready? Ohh!
There we go. [ Chuckles ]
NARRATOR: The crew starts planting the trees
as the last patio tiles are set.
Big finish.
[ Chuckles ]
No more.
TARYN: Oh, my gosh.
NARRATOR: And the surprises for Taryn
keep on coming.
You can't really see what it is right now.
What it will be...
TARYN: Oh, my goodness.
No way!
It's beautiful.
This is why we brought all your friends and family.
My gosh, you guys. Let's do it.
NARRATOR: Everyone grabs a paint color
and starts on the paint-by-number mural.
TARYN: Pallets are my favorite and peacocks are my favorite,
so putting them together,
it's an awesome piece of artwork.
That looks awesome!
I think so.
And we have four pallets to do?
Four pallets.
Guess who's gonna be painting tonight.
[ Cheering ]
NARRATOR: As the guys add
stained 1x4s and lighting to the privacy wall,
Day 1 comes to an end.
You've been out front all day,
and now you get to see the progress.
Oh, my gosh. The privacy wall.
No more neighbors anymore.
No more neighbors.
The sconces, wow, and the plants.
We got overtime to do. We got to finish up this wall.
We got to put some more of these plantings in,
and then you are gonna have a little painting party tonight.
Okay, finish with our mural.
That mural... on pallets.
Excellent.
Say bye to the cameras.
Bye, cameras.
Let's go.
NARRATOR: Coming up, a waterfall that will drown out the traffic.
The higher you get, the more splash you get.
Matt learns to never turn his back on a klutzy showgirl.
[ Laughs ]
And Taryn reacts to her new mural.
I want you to witness the hugging power of Taryn.
[ Laughter ]
NARRATOR: Take a Crash Course, see the crash of the week,
and tell us why your town should be crashed.
It's all on the "Crashers" section of diynetwork.com/crashers.
Good morning, Vegas.
How are we doing?
NARRATOR: It's Day 2 of this Vegas yard crash.
Last night, the last few slats
of the privacy wall were finished,
plants started going in, and the water feature begun.
You want this yard done.
I want it done so bad, I can't see straight.
Painting.
Yes.
Okay, good.
Water feature is looking good.
Just a little bit to do left on that.
Why don't you two guys work on that island out front?
Okay.
We're gonna be working
on putting the acrylic on the table.
And then we got benches to do.
Let's go! Finish it out!
NARRATOR: The cinder-block wall gets painted purple
to match the mural.
The crew continues planting,
using a jackhammer to dig into the hard desert earth.
Artificial grass rolls out along one side of the yard.
And flat court stones line the water feature
and are mortared into place.
How is the water feature?
Here's our shear strip.
Water comes nice and clean down
and gives us a little bit of a modern feel to it.
What it'll do is drown out that street noise
that we have on the other side of that wall.
Right.
Fill this up with the landscape rock on the bottom,
and we'll be good.
Cool. That traffic's going to be gone.
Looks good.
All right, cool.
Once the paint dries,
the pallet mural gets bolted to the wall.
Oh, my gosh. That's amazing.
Isn't that beautiful?
Well, thank you.
Now I want you to witness the hugging power of Taryn.
[ Laughter ]
Very good. Thank you, guys, so much.
NARRATOR: The crew cuts down the pallets that'll become a storage island.
As landscape rock fills the water feature
and goes down as ground cover,
Matt and Taryn have one more step to do on the pallet table.
We're gonna finish it off with some acrylic,
not glass, all right?
So, this is just a little more durable.
We got to be really careful
that we don't chip it or crack it.
[ Saw whirring ]
NARRATOR: They cut the acrylic to 34 3/8" for the width,
then calculate their cut for the length.
We got 124 1/4". We need 85 1/4".
85 minus 124 equals?
95, 105, 115...
Uh, 30 -- 29?
[ Chuckling ] Am I close?
[ Laughs ]
39. Got it.
[ Laughs ]
Neither one of us are too great with math.
[ Chuckles ]
So, let's set up our table saw.
NARRATOR: Relying on Taryn for her math skills
is not the only thing Matt's about to regret.
Oh.
[ Laughs ]
Did I hit you in the head? [ Laughs ]
You're not supposed to hit the contractor.
This stuff is gonna be so crooked now.
My bad. [ Chuckles ]
After cutting the acrylic down,
they peel off the protective paper and drop it in.
Beautiful. Looks like a glass table, doesn't it?
It does, actually.
All right. How's my head?
You got a little knot up there,
but other than that, you're great.
Aah!
I think my hand is gonna shake off.
...lots of cool shade from a sail...
These are two triangles that are high-density polyethylene.
...and a showgirl's joyful reaction to her new yard.
Aah! [ Laughs ]
Yes.
NARRATOR: Matt Blashaw crashed Las Vegas and met one fun-loving showgirl.
Aah!
She loved his rustic-retreat design for her backyard,
so she grabbed a jackhammer.
Now, deep into Day 2 of this crash,
and her showgirl friends haven't quit,
and there is one last pallet project to tackle --
benches.
Drop it. [ Grunts ]
We're gonna cut these down, okay,
and then just use about 3/4 of it.
Snap it.
Pull the trigger,
push the saw.
They cut down and screw together four pallets
to form the base of the bench.
Okay, so now we need the backing.
Two of these are gonna be stuck down
through the actual bench seat itself.
We're gonna use a destruction blade
on the reciprocating saw.
That thing just shakes your arms like crazy.
Aah! [ Chuckles ]
Okay.
I think my hand is gonna shake off.
[ Chuckles ]
So, check this out.
It's gonna go something like this.
What we got to do is that we got to put an angle on it.
NARRATOR: They cut an angle to the supports,
then fit the bench together, screwing the back to the base.
And they add additional slats to the seat.
Oh.
Huh?
[ Chuckles ] I could never do that.
Your friends are gonna start sanding and staining.
Awesome!
As this crash heads to the finish,
the benches get stained...
the pallet island is stacked and screwed together...
the water feature begins to flow...
Oh, my gosh!
[ Chuckles ]
No way.
...the shade sail goes up.
We got shade.
These are two triangles that are high-density polyethylene.
Nice work. You're gonna enjoy this.
NARRATOR: A new fire pit is filled
with landscape stone and tumbled glass,
and all the furniture gets placed...
including a peacock chair.
There's your surprise.
You guys, oh, my gosh!
Relax. You know why?
'Cause your yard is done.
Vegas, we are wrapped.
TARYN: Before, in my backyard,
I had gravel and pink flagstone pavers.
There was
this absolutely disgusting pink cinder-block wall.
It felt like you were literally in the clay desert.
There was no privacy whatsoever.
Aah! [ Laughs ]
The minute I walked through the gate,
everything just felt so alive and exuberant and exciting,
yet romantic and cozy and inviting.
You see this beautiful artwork
that you can't take your eyes off of,
and all this greenery
that you also can't take your eyes off of.
I've got this beautiful fountain.
To have the shade sail is so creative.
The benches turned out better than I ever thought they would.
It was hard work, but worth every minute
Yeah.
TARYN: I can see everybody sitting at the table,
standing around the island, sitting around the fire pit.
It'll be lots of fun.
Damon, Jim, Derek out over there,
and then, of course, the two artists --
we have Sierra and Justin.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
Here we go!
Enjoy.
Crew.
Party over here!
[ Cheers and applause ]
