The first line obviously is we talk to the patient about their behavioral practices,
certainly their fluid intake in the evening can be related to getting up a lot at night
to urinate. Sometimes shifting fluids to morning and afternoon hours does benefit patients
in terms of getting up at night or urinating more frequently at night. Certainly if it's
a man in his older years and he has an enlarged prostate often times we will give them a trial
of one of the medications to help relax the prostate and see if that does help their nighttime
urination and how frequently they have to get up. If it does, it implicates the prostate
as the reason why they may be having these complaints and we can either keep them on
medication or talk about surgical reduction of the prostate.
