Hi, I'm First Lady Katie O'Malley. As parents Martin and I, along with
Lt. Governor Brown, are committed to addressing all forms of bullying in Maryland.
We've seen first hand how serious the issue is
and we know how much you can affect a child's
ability to learn.
And today with the internet, social networks, and cell phones the face of
bullying has changed. The abuse no longer stops at the school yard,
but the bullies now have access to their targets 24 hours a day.
The results are devastating, but we can all help.
This past May thousands of students, parents, educators, and community members
throughout our state participated in the 2nd Annual Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week.
Recently 2 companies, Facebook and Time Warner have announced a new partnership
to put the issue of cyber bullying in the spotlight. I'd like to commend them for
joining this iportent effort to stop the abuse.
Facebook also recently announced a new $200,000 grant
for research on digital citizenship, and I'd like to encouraged all Maryland
researchers to submit proposals for grants on this important anti-bullying research.
We have some of the Nation's best and brightest in Maryland and
I'm confident that researchers have the ability to discover
new and better ways to combat bullying.
It takes each of us working together to stop the abuse.
Thank you.
