DADDY CLAY: Welcome back to Quality Time. I’m Daddy Clay. We’ve got Caitlin from
Girl Start here and she’s going to help us make some dry ice cream and I’ve got
my spoon!
Hey Caitlin, welcome back to the studio. You wanted to come back after doing a segment
with Daddy Brad. Most people don’t want to do that.
CAITLIN: No prob. We’re going to play with dry ice again. We’re going to make some
dry ice ice cream. Every kid loves ice cream!
DADDY CLAY: Ben and Jerry eat your hearts out!
CAITLIN: This is a little cheaper than Ben and Jerry’s and you can make it. It’s
something fun you can do with your kids.
You need some whipping cream, some condensed milk, and some sort of flavoring. We have
strawberry today because that’s what we found. A measuring cup, a bowl, a spoon and
we’ll need dry ice. But lets get all the ingredients together first.
DADDY CLAY: The best part is the spoon.
CAITLIN: About five ounces of whipping cream. You want about three ounces of condensed milk.
Ice cream should really be more of a treat with the condensed milk.
DADDY CLAY: This is great because usually science experiments can’t give you diabetes.
CAITLIN: Well, I’m not saying do this science experiment all the time. Just on special days.
Then, about a teaspoon of flavoring.
DADDY CLAY: Can you add some mix ins like skittles?
CAITLIN: After you have it whipped together. Next you have the dry ice. Dry ice comes in
a big package like this. However you don’t want to eat dry ice so you have to smash it
down into a powder. The back of a hammer works well. So I have some that’s already been
smashed up.
DADDY CLAY: It looks like the consistency of salt.
CAITLIN: Right. This works best with two people.
DADDY CLAY: Ok, I’m stirring.
CAITLIN: A metal bowl works better than a plastic bowl.
DADDY CLAY: I can tell that this experiment must make kids really excited!
CAITLIN: Yeah, they get really excited because they get to make ice cream and eat it afterwards.
DADDY CLAY: For me this constitutes a huge workout! I’m really earning this ice cream
right now.
CAITLIN: As you can see my dry ice was not pounded out at finely as needed and you can
see it at the bottom. You don’t want to eat those but if you take the extra effort
to pound this out completely, you won’t have this problem. You want it to be more
of a powder than tiny pieces. Now I think we both have to eat some. The rule is if you
have a chunk don’t eat it.
DADDY CLAY: Mmmm, science never tasted so good. No, seriously, this is delicious. Thank
you Caitlin for coming in. Thanks also to Girl Start. You ought to go onto girlstart.org
and learn about this cool organization and as long as your online, go over to DadLabs.com
and make a little profile for yourself and join the community there and learn about cool
things like dry ice cream and we’ll share with you, not!
