Maybe some of you people are like Oscar. Oscar always thought it was a matter of just coming
up here, and you would get well. And he'd actually plan his drunks and plan his recoveries.
Oscar lived in Napa. He'd save a little money and get ready for a big night on the town,
and before he'd go out on his big two or three day drunk, he'd call up here and put money
aside for when he would come up here, then he'd go out and he'd get drunk.
His drunks usually wound up at a motel. And he would try to taper himself off for a couple
of days, but, as we all know from our own experiences, he just made himself worse and
worse. And then he would make the call to his wife, and his wife would come and pick
him up. They'd haul Oscar out of the motel room and put him in the back of the car and
drive him up here, and he'd stay here for a week. Just as soon as he ate three solid
meals a day, had a good bowel movement, he was well. He didn't want anything to do with
AA, because Oscar said he was a "periodic."
Well, Oscar did that seven times; got drunk, planned his recovery, got the wife, came up
here. And the eighth time he convulsed in the back seat of his car in downtown St. Helena,
and he died in the back of that car.
