In this Two Minute Tuesday we'll be discussing domain names for Australian
dental practices
and we'll be talking about the sorts of things you should consider
when you're choosing a domain name or website address
for your Australian dental practice. So
what's in a name? One of the things we're very focused on is what the name should
reflect—
should it be the practice name, the dentist's name, or even the location of the practice?
Well, it really actually doesn't matter. Just as long as the domain name makes sense
and it's easy to remember. Your domain name
also has to meet the eligibility criteria for registration.
And this is something that will be discussing in much more detail
next week. It can also be important to consider the length of the name that you
choose to use.
You might want to keep it shorter rather than longer. But what name should you use?
Well in most cases the practice name would be the obvious one to use.
Sometimes the practice name of course is actually the dentist-owner's name or it's a
location-based name.
But your business name, your practice name is unique
and this is why I recommend to Australian Dental Practices that their
domain name
reflects it as closely as possible. Some practices have elected to use the
location of their practice in the domain name,
even if it isn't the name of their business. So I'm talking about a domain
name that looks like dentist and city name [dot] com [dot] au.
Some practices have been told to do this by
an SEO expert because a location-based domain name can help a website to
rank for location-based keywords
like dentist[your local city]. However it's really important to know that a website
that has been well optimised for location
will probably show up for this in any case regardless of what domain name it
has chosen to use.
I think it's a good idea to think about it in this way—
if it wasn't for the presence of search engines and if it wasn't for the
presence of
SEO who sometimes do things to manipulate the position if you practice within the
rankings
would you actually use dentist and the name is your city
as your domain name or would you choose your business name?
Well I suspect that most practices would use their practice name
and that's why it's best practice to do so. It's also interesting to know that
many location-based domain names
have already been taken so it's getting a lot harder to find a domain name that
reflects your location.
So that's why I think you should't bother stressing about it. Use a domain name
that reflects your unique
practice name. What about using the dentist's name as the domain name?
Well that absolutely makes sense particularly if the dentist is wanting
to be known
as the brand of the practice or if they want to become a local identity.
And there's another way in which you can use a domain name that has your name in it
so in my case, DrJackiKearslakeBDS.com.au
I could set up a biographical mini site
separate to my business site. And this would give people who are looking for me
by name
two chances of finding me—one on my biographical website
and one my practice website. So that's another option that you might want to
think about.
So if you need any assistance in brainstorming a great domain name for
your practice
or figuring out a strategy for your online visibility,
