(female student) I took a year off after finishing high school
and dedicated myself completely to skating,
and I traveled to competitions in China
and Japan and Bulgaria,
and I decided that I had
had an amazing time
during my gap year,
and I had really achieved more--
more in skating
than I ever thought I would.
So I couldn't say no to Princeton when I got in.
I would say I was probably pretty out of shape academically.
I really found myself calling on the discipline
I'd used on the ice when I had to write a long paper
or study for an exam or finish a problem set in time,
and when things got challenging,
I knew how to trust myself to do it.
As a history major, one takes a junior seminar,
and mine is called "The Modern Jewish Intellectual."
I'm writing about Abraham Myerson.
I thought that I wanted
to somehow integrate science into that,
and I found Abraham Myerson by accident.
He was the first vocal critic of the eugenics movement,
and what I found really interesting
is the sort of inconsistencies and contradictions
in his writing.
[indistinct conversations]
At Princeton, I probably haven't skated
as much as I would like to,
but I've gotten involved
in running a Special Olympics skating program.
It makes me so happy to see the Special Olympians
falling down and getting up
and enjoying themselves and challenging themselves.
