Each new hire here at Bellevue University is assigned a "buddy". The purpose of the
buddy system is to acclimate the new hire to not only the campus but also the Bellevue
University culture. So yeah, I am the "buddy". An employee's first day on campus is the end
of a long process but the beginning of a really important journey. Yeah, it's been interesting.
I usually don't hang out with, you know, 9-foot-tall mascots. His chosen buddy, Matt, did encounter
some, let's say, learning opportunities. Things have been going well. There's been a couple
setbacks; some things I don't normally deal with. The sheer size of his hands just makes
the day-to-day office tasks a little bit more difficult. I've worked with a lot of new hires,
a lot of "buddies" in the past. But none of them have taken as much of an interest in
our library. The thing about being this guy's buddy is, you know, I'm trying to get to know
him, trying to help him out. And, midday, he just disappears. Nobody knows where he's
at. Hey, have you seen the new guy? How do you lose a nine-foot bear!? Hey, have you
seen the new guy? HOW DO YOU LOSE A NINE-FOOT BEAR! Have you guys seen the new guy? We want
the person inside the costume to be charismatic, talented, good-looking. Do I know who's inside
the bear? Well, um, no comment. So who's wearing the mascot uniform? I think we've found the
perfect person for the job. (bear growl)
