Adoption Team Manager- Nikki. I think maybe what we are mostly looking for in someone
who is looking to adopt a child, is basically a strong motivation to provide healthy, secure,
safe environment for a child. There motivation can come from all sorts of places,. But really
we need to know that they can reflect on that child's past and really help them to make
sense of that, and provide them with a secure base to go forward and grow into adulthood.
Adoption Social Worker -- Shakila. The expectation we have of adopters is that they come into
the process reasonably informed of the type of children they are putting themselves forward
to adopt. Children can need a huge amount of patience. They need resilience in their
carers. They need carers who understand the impact that the trauma they have experienced
has on them in the long run. So it's not only enough to understand these issues in the short
run, but children are going to experience the impact of their background, in years to
come. We need adopters who are informed, who have the stamina and the patience, and accept
the children for who they really are.
It's really vital that adopters have a strong support network around them simply because
parenting is a stressful, difficult task. And when you are caring for children who have
had a difficult early start and that have got numerous difficult needs, it is important
that you have got someone to turn to for advice, support and encouragement really.
The matching process is complicated and it's very thorough and it basically takes into
account both the needs of the adopters, their skills and expertise, and what it is they
are actually looking for. And then the needs of the particular child in question, and whether
they can both come together and format a health happy functional family.
Adopters can be single applicants, married, from any *** orientation, they can own
or rent their properties, really we are open to a wide range of applicants.
The message with our adoption services is we want people to come forward to adopt our
children, we want to consider as many people as we can and we aim to be as inclusive and
transparent in our adoption process as possible.
