As a resident of Brisbane, you have an important role to play
in keeping our environment clean and sustainable.
To help you, Council provides residential bin collections
for waste, recycling and green waste,
kerbside clean-ups and business recycling services.
Here are a few simple ways you can help to reduce waste.
Council has weekly bin collections for your general household waste
and fortnightly bin collections for your household recyclables.
Wheelie bins with red or dark green lids are for general waste,
and the yellow-top wheelie bin is for recyclables
such as paper, cardboard, cans,
glass bottles and plastic containers.
For an additional fee, we can provide you with a green waste bin
for all of your garden waste, which has a bright green lid.
To check which day your bins will be collected,
you can ask your neighbours,
phone us or visit our website.
Don’t forget to make sure your bins are placed on the footpath
by 5am on collection day.
The bins should face the kerb,
be a minimum of thirty centimetres apart,
and away from obstructions such as overhanging trees, where possible.
The best way you can help keep Brisbane’s environment clean
is by following the rules of correct waste disposal.
Illegal dumping of household rubbish, garden waste or other materials
damages Brisbane’s natural areas,
and can lead to a fine and criminal charges.
so always make sure you dispose of larger items
at one of Council’s four transfer stations.
Unwanted furniture and household items still in usable condition
can be donated at the Transfer Stations to Brisbane’s Tip Shops.
Tip Shops are located at Geebung and Acacia Ridge
and are a great place for a bargain.
Ratepayers can use waste vouchers to dispose of large items
and green waste at transfer stations,
or you can use the free annual kerbside collection service
for large item collection.
Council is dedicated to making sure Brisbane remains a green city.
Our main environmental program is called Green Heart,
and its aim is to make Brisbane the most sustainable city in Australia.
The program helps residents adopt practical and affordable ways
to reduce carbon emissions
while becoming more energy and water efficient.
You can visit our website to find tips on how to save water,
reduce litter and reduce energy usage.
Our tips, incentives and practical information
