joining me from brooklyn new york is julie on a for a lot of she's the host
of absurdity today had thirty d today dot com also a professor at brooklyn
college guiliani you were basically right in the middle of hurricane sandy
in uh... near some of the hardest hit areas as you watch the media coverage of
what was being reported initially during the hurricane of course that the after
the fact
what's missing from that narrative
well i think some of the things that are dismissing carmen merit it is
basically that's other people are still you need it seems to have
it seems to have a baby a_t_t_
mediates
immediacy has
or not but i was just
volunteering l our neighborhood has a lot of places where you can box here
architects and he has set up a lot of places where you've been i'd go and
volunteer time and also reaping
things that he needs thirty-something degrees outside
and people still don't have seats
but in their homes they don't have
electricity they don't have water you know some of these basic needs and now
that it's freezing people are really really
really still suffering
uh... so i think it needs to be capped in the media
spotlight
uh...
i mean i was just
basically putting together
uh... donated coats to take down to
uh... the elderly income yemen's and so when we were going to spend together
uh... working and that there is this what the tire building notes
of elderly people who
they do not medicine they can't get
their medications nineteen and i think their medications that they're not able
to access things like tylenol advil
uh...
impending supplies things like that
are not readily available also
all on the it's just
it's just a little bit of an on
situation because
what i'm saying
quote-unquote everything's fine
missing buzz aldrin monsanto opens doors they're sec
selling things like
wedding invitations are running
uh... but not too far from here people are so
bring ads going cold hungry so it's a severe dichotomy that i think
needs to be
you know brock
brought to light what the situation as far as national guard and police and
first responders in those areas that are still
uh... as you described in his their presence or what recourse do people have
is that there is anyone picking up when you call nine one one and then what is
what are we looking at
that's actually really good question i don't know because i haven't been and
aren't they
ends
i do know that you know has made their way to read a book which is one of the
hardest hit areas
program ob little look
both sample redbook
uh...
and i know that they're giving out supplies
images but inspired by a bit as far as i know it's not enough
has there been any problem with people uh... moving more or any of the type of
things that can start to happen around the situations
now archive
yassin rockaway there's been people closing as uh... neema
or other authorities going
c people's house is saying any access here
uh... we're going to check
whatever it is and they come in and they take
uh... some people
the there
uh... or fear that they will be enters by some of the sort of not so on
you know not not so i guess unsavory
characters
uh... so in addition to not really having the resources they need to get
back on your feet there's also this story about unsavory
aspect spelling on
are there any e_t_a_ is as far as
any of the things that still need to happen is there a line of communication
or that this kind of what we're going to get wherever weekend
as we can and that's it there's there's no plan
well rump you know from volunteer perspective from the perspective of a
community member helping
there is no end in sight in terms of how many days
uh... these different groups are going to be ringing supplies
where they're needed coney island the rockaway staten island is pretty hard
hit still
uh... reddit worksheet uh...
those neighborhoods are tests
i don't know and it's going to take a while for them
city
for them to be dealt i haven't heard any specifics
uh...
it keeps saying well the next couple days were rockaway we're going to happen
stack on back
it doesn't necessarily feel that way when you're out there yen sometimes
getting the e_p_a_'s is actually worth a friend of mine in new jersey said that
she was told he was given anything ever getting a power back except it's not
until thanksgiving which is which is incredible so
this is alonso nine biochemist i've heard it
so did you lose power only briefly of what it would have had a jew gets paired
but we were actually spirit
i mean we have licorice so
uh... lately we bet the lights were on the whole time he does that i think that
people coming from the on howard beach in queens we head out
were bought by family members come and stay with us though i mean they are
we're looking at your looking at the apartment break here
uh... so we have stopped in a bind people and their lights came back out
and now we have people coming
uh... who are basically just you know we love and there are co-workers
uh... so we're reaching out beyond
uh... and i think a lot of people are doing this meeting up beyond their
general circle of
who they would normally help your cousin your red
uh... too
i mean we have our co-workers are coming to stay with us
uh... tonight and they they're en route there were one block from the boardwalk
that was ripped up in not far rockaway
and so they really don't know when like it's going to get back to normal
um...
you know we're happy to have them
and uh... it's that nice to be neighbors are offering
there's really a sense of community
uh...
like there is i would think
uh... whenever any tragedy strikes at you never hear you never here are some
tragedy strikes now people are all saying oh
you know
every man for themselves let's let x about that you never hear that you know
it no one goes to work
uh... you know conservativism when west when there is
you know uh... some sort of thing happening in your actual viewed yet not
even chris chris they went towards conservatism interestingly enough
uh... we've been speaking with julie on a for a lot of host of absurdity today
checkout absurdity today dot com also professor at brooklyn college guiliani
uh... thanks for checking in with us face even
all right we'll take a break come back we'll play more active
