Motivation - Feedback
This is Lily Iatridis of Fortuigence with another teaching tip for you parents to help
you motivate your kids at school. This is one particular strategy that is perhaps one
of the most powerful strategies in teaching your kids.
That is feedback. Feedback is how you tell kids how they did in relation to what they
were trying to achieve, in an assignment, in answering a simple question, in a big project,
and so on.
It’s so important, and it has a huge impact on them. When you respond to them, when you
respond to their efforts and tell them how they did, make sure that it has the following
characteristics.
Feedback has to be about their actual work effort, not about them personally. Feedback
needs to be non-judgmental. It needs to be specific. It needs to be informative. It needs
to be told to them in a way that they can understand and receive it and see how to improve
their work effort to get it to where they want it to be.
Last but not least, feedback needs to be given in a timely manner. You can’t have them
finish a project, hang on to it for a week or so, and then look at it for the first time.
Do your best to review it as quickly as possible and give them some immediate feedback. Keep
the feedback as immediate as you possibly can.
Parents, that will tell your kids that you value their work, you treat them as mature
kids who you know can do better, and that will really help their motivation.
