Hi, I'm Pips Taylor, and welcome to Playlist Unsigned.
This week we have a mighty performance from Tommy Ludgate.
This is 'Mighty'.
[Music]
In classic British style, we've had to get the brolly out.
But we've got Tommy Ludgate with us. And how are you?
I'm good, thank you.How are you?
Good, very well, very well. Where do you draw your musical influences from?
Singers I love are like Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Ray Charles.
The big guys.
Yes, those kinds of people.
Now let's talk about the 'Mighty' EP. Brilliant name for an EP. This is your first EP after
your debut album. So how is it different? Is it different in any way?
Yes, the debut album was totally written on a moment of heartbreak.
Right.
And it's all quite sad, which is nice. And it was therapeutic.
Good process.
But I then met my current boyfriend. I think he's the one.
Pretty mighty?
Very mighty.
Oh, you think he's the one?
He's six foot seven, so he's pretty mighty.
This is great!
And I felt happiness. It was the opposite. He said, 'Come on, you've got to write some
upbeat songs!' And I was like, 'Okay, you're right.' So this EP is a bit more. Apart from
this song 'Mighty', it's a bit more upbeat and funky. And I think that's the vibe I want
to continue.
Yes, the path you're going to go down.
Yes.
Festival essential. What would you take to a festival?
What can't you live without?
I'm going to admit something now. I have never been to a festival.
No!
Yes.
Tommy!
I know. It's a sheer crime, isn't it? Fact is, I am a bit of a granny. I'd rather be
tucked up in bed, drinking a cup of tea.
Having a cup of tea.
Watching it on TV! Closeups, way better. My theory is, I'll go to a festival
once I'm playing the big stages, and I can be in luxury.
What would your demand be?
Sushi.
Sushi?
Love it.
Dressing room full of sushi.
Yes.
Like it. Tommy, thanks so much for coming on Playlist Unsigned.
No worries.
Thanks for holding the umbrella throughout.
It's a complete pleasure.
It's kept us dry. And masses of luck.
And enjoy singing.
[Song - 'Mighty] TL: You can be the bad energy in the room,
for you always give the love. You're the laughter at the tables ever
when something's up. Is that good enough?
One extreme or the other, it's violence that you need.
She's broken you down, now you'll have me. Cut in and take out the good, the bad, the
ugly. Cut in and take out all that makes you blue.
Cut in and take out the good, the bad, the ugly,
It's no matter what I say, you know it's true. You are mighty.
Fire in her soul, she's in control. I used to think she was right for you.
But I don't know, now she's opened a door Shines light on a cold heart of truth.
One extreme or the other, It's violence that you need.
She blames you, but you both let it be. Cut in and take out the good, the bad, the
ugly. Cut in and take out all that makes you blue.
Cut in and take out the good, the bad, the ugly,
It's no matter what I say, you know it's true. You are mighty.
You're down now, pull you back now. You got the lovesong and I?
You're down now, pull you back now. You got the lovesong and I?
You're down now, pull you back now. You got the lovesong and I?
You got the lovesong and I? You got the love.
Be strong now.
