stock but this group called him back to my contact information if you need it
come
the dark but stop order king connects with me because more offended that copy
what technology and tools and so on
uh... i think what is that is what are they going to talk about is something
that you know
we often wonders what what what happened when we use these tools and so on
and i think that given that someone who works for me because
even though we spent a lot of part time thinking about the wires and the cables
and the wifi and you know how do we get things to work its division the unified
vision um... that is more important
and the throat one more quote here so let's start with this one um... take a
look at this it says that the introduction of the use of the internet
may prove as a focal as the wheel or the steam power how many people agree with
that lets you show of hands
okay we have a
let's look at them back to the pope in a minute
all but i want to start with some apologies force we have been diluted
sick
the last few days so if either under the bus from you know why
inbetween are also apologized that i might be repeating myself some of the
slides because i've had a couple of sessions already so for those who would
have those sessions sorry
and finally one apologize for not being the other hand in all the hole in the
long guy
because a couple of people come to visit although permits rides break-neck norma
shrine that's retirement off
so he's accused
his tomorrow okay
so if you're here for him even though i don't think that it's all right
off a lot of things copy conference organizers and the high school here in
justin and all the people worked out really what this has been just a
wonderful experience for me
uh... to be here uh...
thus the wonderful environment grade school and you know
meeting and talking with people that this actually be not break
uh... despite the little girl isn't all that
uh...
so a little bit about myself often my dream uh... my dream is actually to be
in the simpsons
and uh...
that sort of what i would look like um...
acquired simpson's
more seriously i have a faculty member at michigan state university
and miss you
um... i direct a master's program in education technology and uh... alcohol
grads that given the audience and i've met a few
now supposed to meet some people for lunch today and apologize i couldn't
make it to call for that uh...
if i would be remiss if i didn't speak of my friend and colleague with whom
i've been a lot of my work uh... that's macular looks very cool both with
sunglasses and without
and uh... we spend a lot of part-time on thinking and talking and apart from
having beer uh...
about technology in education and particularly out what is it the teachers
need to know so that would be a main focus of what i would talk about
but the comeback armed to the original quote
so i had this and what this court essentially says that this network of
devices is going to be greater than the wheel of the steam engine
the only problem here is that i'd like to you
because the court is not about the internet
any guesses as to what the court was about
blackboard slate
look at it that spoke to you
it's about the caulking picture
and this was an academic book written by
somebody back in nineteen thirty three uh... university of chicago press uh...
anytime i see that i have a copy of that book and i keep it there by me because
he said that this would be bigger than the real augustine again you know how
that conduct right
and so the question is what have we learned
and and this is an actual slide from an educational video
and i love the fact that they were not typo in there
so what is it that we have learned
through this process
uh... but i think that
one the biggest thing really for me is that we have to be humble we have to
show some humility when we talk about that none of the and
schools and change and so on
for the simple reason that
there's a larger institutional um... issue that state there are photos social
all kinds of issues at stake
so thinking about change
arm that we can just introduce a device or a bunch of devices into uh...
larger organization or appeal a social structure
i think that going to happen right away
uh... may not be appropriate
but the other thing i think you need to think about is how we
frame the discussion i don't have knowledge in education
about how we frame and how we see the issues
become really important because it influences what we see the kinds of
decisions we make
the money that we put in the book teacher training about what students
should be learning and so and so forth
and one of my biggest criticisms in this context
has to do with what i call the pixma centric frame
which puts technology in the center in says that he is technology and i'll keep
it in
all of these kinds of good things that came to know that will happen
uh... which is sort of another way of saying is moving beyond a pile of
technology
we just at the gate at the politics of that with all this is so cool right
and that may be baat
i'm gonna question fitness centers and i'm gonna do it uh... using some of
three different targets
the first one
as the technology is changing that extremely rapid rate
this is our of
do you think about it the other way of looking at it of course that nothing
much has changed if you look at the first one in the last one right
but one of my favorites like this one which looks at different technologies
and different generations
uh... we took for that technology to come about right
and a generation according to my favorite
resource wikipedia is around thirty five to thirty years
so if you think about this each of us ten thousand generations ago the speech
happen and that's what sets us apart from the rest of the
the animal kingdom in you know there are people can't quibble about it but
public speech
as something and that's what brings about culture allows us to
communicate allows us to grow our knowledge and so on
we have to go around nine thousand two hundred fifty more generations before we
reach the next big one which i've caught acupuncture
do you think about agriculture dvd's to list idea of distribution of labor
somebody's dope on somebody birthing kit off
the melody thought some colors
and somebody's going to educate the kids so advice
as educators sort of emerged
just seven hundred and fifty generations ago as a profession right
are moving forward printing
i'm writing about five hundred generations ago
and that leads to history india ability to transfer knowledge
across generations across time
commoners huge step for it
the next step printing
now this is interesting printing
he's just twenty four generations ago
and it's this ability to print knowledge in these little flimsy things and
transferred to each other
that if you think about it
post wooden but you have the reformation he had the renaissance you had the
american in the french revolutions the idea that all
humans are created equal
it comes from this technology a print the fact that there is no longer
arbitrator off who decides what we know what we should know
but that knowledge can be distributed free
the idea that poor people should be literate with those kinds of ideas come
about because of this
technology of print
moving forward a few computers couple of generations ago internet email
one generation ago
how many people of teenagers
how many people work with pictures oak tree
so my kids i have two teenagers and
i can send the payment of the never said that you know
the only way to get in touch with them to me that that's them or similar missus
unfaithful
so email according to the mister old people
i don't know
anyway
this is the way so that we live in right now and i spent a little bit of time
picking up some
you know snow goes from here and there
and i think that we have tossed aside what does it mean to live in this world
where
something like wikipedia exists
org
you know award of warcraft
when our kids aren't artwork is enmeshed in these kinds of tools and technologies
and then when you think of
web two point or tools
you know user generated content
what are the implications of that
for us as educators
and if you think about you know i mean it's this web two point or face book
twitter
things like that which led to
something at the end of spring
and to think of that i mean didn't heed to that but i
make that happen
and if somebody will come to me and told me like
six seven years ago that i have this really cool idea
you can send
one hundred and forty five characters of
and you can send it over the world how cool is that i will support a stupid
idea what it would do with that
recommend what sense does that make and look at all of us are trend of the
stratosphere going on for the conference i've already seen a bunch of people say
oh i think one sorry i couldn't make it in and falling interpreter
you have this
so what do you think about i think about when i was growing up you know how
information is to come at me
i was growing up in new delhi and if i'd i'd love to read
and if i wanted to get some books i have to go to the british consulate or to the
u_s_ eyes library
and that was a one and a half hour bus ride away and i'd go once a month
get these bags
of books and then go back the next month's informational sort of like this
and now it's like this
and it's no wonder that when you're an educator you feed like this
okay and this is actually uh... real sculpture in uh...
the university of uh... into at the university medalist
and but after an article i love the photographer the walking oversee the
summit with the birthday click this a real good
so i went back and we're going to get the check and he's still there
so what this means is that we need to rethink
how we think about what technology is in the first surrey thinking technology
i think is the next layoffs of questioning decide if it wasn't reason
so a question i ask is that what is an educational technology
and so we have all these different things everything from a magnifying
glass to prey on who xbox of the connects system face book
i mean which of these educational technology which are not
and the answer that matt and i sort of talk about is that there is no such
thing as an addition to go
what we have a good idea of different technologies
and our job as educators is to be purpose customize them
for our needs now work up a little bit about that
this is uh...
scientific calculator
you can
go into uh...
university library and you can find dissertations written about powell
this can be used to teach mathematics right
the problem is
interests and that it's a single function device
the devices that we have today are these ones
which do
you know mathematical calculation bruce and difficult mission is this an m_p_ p
plans of the device to be a videos with ap score
what is this the how many different things gennady too many protean
character device
and the type of computers about what happens if
every chatting at last has a device like this they often mention this idea of
loss of control
and when the talk about loss of control they often mean things like that but i'm
teaching the battle in seattle
some kid is on your chilled somebody is
texting somebody else
acid that sargent rossi wrestle control
the loss of controlled happens is when you are taking the political influence
somebody
discovers
online another proof of the team that you don't know
that israel loss of control
so the problem
when you talk about the quote is that most acknowledges are not designed for
education
you know they're not design
educational purposes
is that as users get or reason redefining technology
so my favorite example of that is the email
how many of you have said that you know to yourself
okay very strange group of people
let me think about it if you're walking down the street and e_c_ summit docking
for themselves
you got a crossover at dissapointed
but we do it right on what to do it for
what it is an anemic yourself
do remember a thing as a reminder as a calendar sort of thing ok who do list
there you go boating from one place to another so that if you want to go home
and what you don't get it will come right into the military ourself
so use of an archive system using to do list
my favorite is this guy emmett
at this conference will be in the book in the afternoon session at the citadel
i'm a teacher and sometimes i get into real trouble with met mister ickes and
then i sit down and write and long
the hartford angry email and send it to myself
passivity
that's very good
but again he was not designed for all of these purposes not designed for therapy
it was not designed for archiving
but we do it very
eazy-e_ doesn't it's not like we are you think they're doing something incredibly
creative
but at some level b r we are taking these are defective using them in ways
that they were not designed to be
i collect examples of these
so here's one which is uh... uh...
what a lot more in a bicycle
this is a chinese restaurant arm where the use clothes pins to keep track of
orders
another instrument by one
which is push pins to keep track of orders again
this is from india uh... estes park uh...
model dot which is basically you go to the junkyard canoe get pieces off
different cars and trucks and instead of putting together
uh... duct tape and magic
his work on it
uh... and it just on the sort of five miles per hour comforting in a peaceful
as often the people that none of the state of the newark again right
so what the question is what is the support
life is important for us
i think it's important because only people at the scene makes a technology
and education department
i think that's a really important thing for us is educate to think of
and an example of a give us sort of like microsoft excel lot of teachers we each
match use microsoft excel
now accept is clearly not design
each kids learn mathematics there too many options kids get lost
so that was small
break but we know why do we do it because it's on every computer
microsoft is of the corporation and its you know has a delivery machine
that's fine you work with what we have
and i think that's something that the dictators are really good at working
with the resources that we had
another example of mine which is sort of a favorite example of mine is
of repurposed ng something is textbooks
if there's one thing that's been designed specifically accused clinton
before your class room
its effects
but what do you do
we save read the falling chapters don't read this
here's some supplemental material
yet again picking something which is supposed to be the rainforest and then
customizing it for our own needs
and i think that we need to start thinking before technologies in that way
and this report missing
is a creative and innovative at
the crucial mediating role here is paid by the teacher
and every once in awhile i get some rhetoric off
teacher proof critical
and if there's one thing that i've learned in my work over the last
you know it sounds funny to see biscuits with gravy is that if you hold on to
something but techniques
is that there is no such thing as a teacher proofread
soap to arguments for questioning purpose of december rapid rate of change
and thing that the of the repurposed rethink how we think of technology
third argument for questioning picked up eight percent of the man who comes to
education
is that it it ignores to very important things
it ignores the content and the paddock
if you think only of the technology
so technology changes how we teach
the greatest i think educational technology that has come about in our
lifetime
but just think about a kid in botswana active east lansing michigan the kid in
hongkong
certainly has access to information that
more interest in that
any generation
in human evolution has ever had access to
logistic ideal if it is mindboggling
a pink now we can ask questions about how much of that infamous is valid and
can be very frightening that this can you do that
that leads to what i call who knows where the third laughlin
that are not that they are free to before
uh... but i like prime numbers so that's what's right for you
so there's a pretty seventh off writing a song rates up
uh... so though this is with my kids is for facts go to global but wasn't going
to meet
right because it's a world where we can find out that infamous you can go online
and look it up
but wisdom now that something that's right
what to do with information how cool
you know baked
generalizations based on how to make inferences ho but think about that
subject
so you combine booboo with
things like opencourseware
videos laconic added me
with reptile point all user generated content and so on
this idea bring your own device to schools of clearly technology
fundamentally changes
who teach
growth of online learning
so when you look at these two you can see them a separate for me to be another
see them as overlapping with the genetics that intersection
that is of interest to us
technology in pedagogy come to get
so technology in pedagogy for two pieces there
and uh... this is what i call a big block
because teaching is always a bulk something
because i've content disagree knowledge mathematics physics music art
you know physical education
so insulin howard gardner says the but one of the greatest invention of
humankind is but are the idea of the disciplines
that they can garden major up in terms of physics and economics and
you know all mathematics in music
and the beautiful billboard disciplines is that the pizza some proceeded you
just have a look at the world
and understanding
make predictions about
you know make sense of
and they do it by
disciplined allows to develop new forms of knowledge divas purposes for why the
not to be developed
uses methods
so the scientific method is very different from the artistic
short of peace and agreed upon it's not the same thing as having them on the
side of the experiment
and a different forms of representation
math and music both of sweets
but they do
a big difference goods
soap that is a form there's a way of learning and thinking
bone in the discipline and that sort of keep bart off what
schooling and learning is about
so you can look at all of these discipline he told them allows us to see
the world
in a different way
a physicist is the word of the forces that actions and responses
anarchists is the same phenomena i might even from the pacific response
so that's a big part of what schooling is about board of education is about is
learning to see the world food is disappointed lenses
however
somebody was good at a distance away
physicist our report
knowing a disciplined does not necessarily
meagan good at teaching be appalled that faculty members and even college
who it may be the pop much person in their field
and when it comes to teaching if they can do it and this also sure minsky
insight
teaching discipline is really about transforming a discipline to make a
cannibal
to be understood by someone else
to understand the learner to understand and the misconceptions they can have to
understand
what developmental stage they are so that's the key idea pedagogical content
knowledge
and coming back to technology
technology changes what we teach as well
if you look at any discipline today
it has fundamentally changed
because of the evidence account
physicist do simulations off
you know again i think religions mathematicians do that
musicians compose music on this and to do all kinds of competition the stuff
videographers anybody you look at
video game designers
technology is funded you can't every discipline
and that's not something new i mean it's been going on forever
so i was going to get a conference in the netherlands and i wanted to give a
local example now
soul byron online and on the product realize that the microscope was invented
by a doctor
and so that's
the dutch guy except i don't know how to pronounce his name
so i went online to how do you pronounce that i copied and pasted his name
and this sort of amazing aboard the internet
somebody in boston had the same question at some point and went and did more than
i did
were detected and reported to be different voices
and put it up there and so you can hear what
it sounds like i'm tony kahn leaving
that's what you're supposed to say
and i thought how did she know that i would be that five years in the future
you know but i think that's the beauty of the internet which is like people put
these things out there
you know the small pieces with the joint and what kind of connection to my
daughter that is fascinating
but this technology
of the microscope change the way fundamentally the we think about the
word that would drop a quarter has millions of little creatures
when junkie and meeting in which is ok
my favorite example technology and pondered constrain each other
is this one
the periodic table offense
we've all seen the site's i'm sure in the chemistry lab here that the nice
because traffic
the problem is that if you look at it if you come along the royal you come
through number fifty six very improper that you are supposed to go day is
supposed to go down here and go along this role
you see the two
rose in the bottom
so ideally the representation of the people should be this way
but most of the representations of this way
because of the technology of the print
which as you do you have to make it
ford out what he did the says really small island chemist will go back a lot
of information into the cells
what's fascinating is that if you go and look at it i just go on line and do a
search for different representation of the addicting
this is what i was a graduate student and i was ready to go by
dissertation on evolution and biology and help people learn that
and then i bought this book called
multiple representation of the periodic system it at four hundred different
representations
things like this three-dimensional inspite owens and they're all right but
not wrong
at the knesset having all this fun creating this stuff
this still creating new ones today
and to our students to give one representations that that's the truth of
the capitol t
you know i think that's very interesting
now the description of the cell size is gone because not what you can do is you
can click on this and you can watch a video of the elements like fundamentally
changes the way we engage with
chemistry an element of the periodic table
so again content and technology also interact with each other
is that intersection
that is interesting
so we have talked about
content technology pedagogy all three things now all of this happens
within specific context
if you're in a one-on-one kind of a classroom that's a very different
context
then this last minute with internet access maybe or may not be available
it's there for the stop another day of the classroom is open for so long
albany abysmal by devices that kids can carry on with them
or the contest would be something like this where
the state of missouri decided to ban
feature student friendships on face book
in their infinite wisdom
or can situations where students in denmark allowed full access to the
internet during exams
and this is interesting that the most interesting
and so i thought it happened later one of the comments from somebody in the
ministry was that
that they had to change the best
because
they have to hosp more
how and why question rather than we know who questions because you can quickly
look that up
and back to me is a very interesting examples of the subversive nature of
this technology sometimes
when they come into the system
and the change
other things that they were not predict it will be do you think about
what do all these things me
so so far we have
all of these
date should not be seen as being separate from each other
the idea is that that day
overlap
that all good teaching happened at the intersection of technology pedagogy and
contact and that sort of the key of the model don't be present
which is called the feedback mormon now come to that
so it's this interaction between
how technology pedagogy and content
that's the important thing
not seeing them in isolation
so we offered to sell out thing up back in two thousand in six
army called it
cpc camargo
people are sustained a control we suppose to pronounce this
is is the perfect model picking up
i thought because of our friends but maybe not
so it i said was this and so what would it be academics who wrote a grant andy
got fifty dollars and you can buy a volatile
um... fifty bucks kitty osvaldo and still indicative that remark
much easier to pronounce
and the other way of thinking about it is what we call the total package ok and
they argue that whether you're teaching with chopped or call you up into the
computer of the web
eating his always about deepak
when they talk about technology hit it doesn't necessarily mean the latest
gizmodo
pencil and paper the technology
notebook has occurred
chocolate technology a whiteboard
black border blackboard book on the four different technologies
support little bit of his fearless but too much time on a column
we wrote this article into positive six there's a handbook of ppc k this is
before we got the money to buy the bhalo
uh... which is out in two thousand and eight
uh... the php
article has been cited a lot of times which is great uh...
more interestingly and and and more rewarding i think for us is the fact
that a lot of organizations across the u_s_ in across the world
has started
using this framework thinking about this for a verdict of the developing the
teacher education curriculum in terms of
professional development of teachers
um... there's been recent article dissertations uh... mac and i will be in
australia
sort of month i think one of the month
uh... because of this huge teachers uh... teaching teachers for the future
project that's going on there
but i think it's in different parts of teacher education
which have used to be back for a look at the referee thinking uh... become tulum
for teacher preparation which is cool which is very rewarding really
up to think that
use it in east lansing michigan fan
we write something in legal services and publish it
african influence and get me to come here and we got a few
what can be better
uh...
if you want to know more to back up a large eat how does a good place to start
i would recommend that
so i'll move on from that
so what have we learned about
features of technology and technology integration
but one thing is we know one thing that these are just shown what doesn't work
what does that work is seeing these three things as being separate from each
other
shoe leather work has been around for a while so people typically have some
pedagogical content safeguard
to be a math teacher you'll get some courses in mathematics you'll get some
courses general education but you get some forces
in math education
but technology typically mostly to education programs ends up being this
course out there
and i see the same thing happening a lot of peter professional development as
well
where do you have
come in for this day one day of p_d_ and beauty jihad the window we capable but
the website problem
you know you straighter
trek and i don't think that
back to me he does work
i think what works is when you look at these pieces in an integrated fashion
when you're thinking about technological
capabilities of the store for teaching specific on
the way they represent mathematics is different from we we think about
using for artful literature right alrighty and so on
that has been quite a bit of research of different ways of developing deepak and
i'm not going to
get into the detail of that
that interested in depth please send me an email i consider some articles
so we have focus a large part of our work on the sort of learning but design
approach
but other people across the country in the world
uh... had been developing other ways of thinking about development
but i want to focus on something which appealed is really more important than
that
which is thinking about how this technology skin fundamentally change
what it is that they do look at how we can break out
of the box
that we're sort of
constrained in
and thinking about the transfer made investments abuse of technology
so a lot of focus has been on sort of standard technology used and people up
to cuban
as earliest human have argued that just because somebody uses technology doesn't
mean that the north of teachers
so a large focus has been a technology integration
what i would argue that we had at the point where we need to start thinking
about innovating which of them
coming up with new ways of teaching
with this technology or give a few examples
the first one is uh...
this high school entity
uh... which computed the distance to the moon
finding freely available and p_-three's of the book you know that
recordings of the conversation mission control and
the the astronauts on the surface of the more
and if you listen to it carefully you'll see that there isn't that cool
there's a slight echo between
the last meeting of the eagle has landed with misinterpreted
and that's because the
recommended signals are going
from the rest of the moon and back again to say when you're making a in
international forgotten but the difficult
and so what do you guys did at the progress to be which is an application
for actually people use for making podcast and so on
and use that as a data analysis
zoomed in and you can see over there
the little echo
and computed the gap
between the south india
and the teachers that gives up and groups they have to decide where they
should you know so there was ever and all that and that but
once you got back gap
all you have to do is divided by two
and multiply by the speed of light
and you get the distance to the morgue
and they were still accurate that the court activists
then when the moon was closer to the earth and further away but the moon
doesn't go in a perfect circle
so to me that was it like the really interesting little activity that was
done
but for me what was
truly fascinating was using audacity as a bigger and then the system
that's what i've been trying to say when i say when the people of refocusing
got going teacher teacher and say you need to know that city because it's
going to get analysis tool because you don't know the daily use of them
so that puts me at seven disarm us
who are involved in peter education what and what would be to professional
development
because like i said the store the forty enemy can use them in many different
ways and it's hard to predict what it would be
that what prevention use could be
so that's interesting
the second one is from the us impeaching letter did the summer
and uh... i was teaching a course that leadership and outlets tried to find an
activity that matches some of the content of their teachers that they can
cover some technology as well
and in leadership we always have this tensions ready have sort of top donors
of bottom-up organic was this in a house on support
and so we had two meetings on that
and one of the activities i gave my students was okay
let's make the list of all this attention to the edible gold offered me
the list of the stations
and the often when the game back
i told them that given these tools which is any digital camera that they have a
tripod
and this free website put pics though which is like a photoshop
they had to create a representation of one of those tensions
which showed
the same person in more than one way
so that it would be like me talking to myself to that make sense in elective in
the multiple roles in the movies
but they have to represent the stations
so here is one representation of the same guy
and he's talking about how you can be
you know community of learners as individual
so that was as we have representing it
uh... this one was organized versus chaotic
so you can see that a lot of fun with it and the greater the technology and
allowed us to sort of explore the idea of this tensions
that's ok assignment done over semesters alderman summer's over their gone back
to the classrooms
and then on face book i did this email from this one teacher
that's not because she was arrested that's how we put pictures up on our
students including myself
for the class of just for fun
and what you told me she was taking a high school class and geometry
and what she had a high school students do
is think about probation reflection translation
by doing this assignment
so you can see
the students had to go and do the same assignment and this was on face book
this is what she wrote
says that had some form of cloning consolation geometry some groups
daughter others not so much
maple big discussion
though about transformation and isometric
sub to me this is a great example of repurposed england we came up with an
activity for
something and what was the two big didn't say that all this can be used
only to represent pensions
but sicko i can possibly use this
repeats geometry each
transformations in geometry
which i think is really excited
for example is what act
all dina graphs we don't
sort of with the for preventing functions
and even more interesting now is that with this project with microsoft will be
looking at the connect
as we have for presenting mathematics
and this guy is written this program that lets you connect your pc to the
connect
edits this fascinating because you can go in
and by moving your arm so you can draw the equation of the line you can't
change the angle you can draw a parabolic
i mean it's a victim aesthetic way
understanding mathematics
again the connect system was not supposed to be designed for that
it can be used for that
so one thing that you'd like to ask yourself is what to do the example
status
would this have been possible a hundred years ago
ten years ago
five years ago
then the question is
what will be possible five years from
and what does it mean
for learning in the twenty-first century
remember that we're just at the beginning of the twenty first century
so there's a long way to go the profession to cancel right
so the question i think it's hard to be prepared ourselves and our students
now one of the one example of a friend of mine was a teacher
the name is sean nash
deters a biology in benton high school in central missouri and i got
acting you met finely last year we had i've known for four or five years we
just met online
villard each other like most excellent is very interesting he grew up in
seem to missouri i grew up in india
and we meet online and it is great friendship
and is a fantastic teacher
one of the things he does his philosophy is that
if you can't imagine anyone linking the what you're about to write
don't right
to think about what that means
that students working in a high school classroom
need to do hand-picked work
so you can book was principles of biology website sanding
it's one late secretary california you can check in anything like it never
leaves it up
people love their members forever on that and a number of that name
your boss to be a member of the ning but if the public webspace all the work that
students who was publicly available to see
visitors from all these countries
and he has a students go out
in the world
you know eight pictures do analysis report that back and people can believe
that
he had to students develop representations of the trip cycle and
this is really interesting to the students develop the representations
are you are so later one of the student seeming to miss it
mister nash in you know that
this university
has linked to what we did as a resource from learning about the crib cycle
i think about that
and a bunch of high school students created something which but again it's
because he put it all a bit he made it clear to the students of the stakes are
very high for the students
and for that
that the work has to be good
and this is an interesting story where he published using a text book by this
author
and one of the students posted on the off he invited the author of the join
the meeting and they'll to join the name and one of the students boasted that it
would be so called will have
of coral
uh... from iowa
and i think that you can tell it's a high school student to this day
some free contention coralville iowa
and one point in dash gets a box in the mail which has the quarrel
and the and you can see the letter says
it is freakin amazing
and the students is by using the names that were just thinking my part of
loaded author her dance in the peace of ancient history
i think that's really interesting i don't and there are lots of examples
that natin talk about a lot of them but i can talk about
from just by putting stuff all that on the internet and putting it out there
having people axis it
and going to go back to me
in ways that are really powerful
the other thing the often talk about is that we need to develop a community of
learners
and shot nash has done that defined is really interesting
so this is a student of witnesses and he will be gone from a student
good graduated from his classes and now in college
and wanted to use an example of student writing that was going on in
john stossel
something that she was doing
and i think that we often within his laptop inchon and i said look up
have a plan in mind he said no
i was just doing things and hoping that you know things would work out and some
things didn't and i stopped doing those and
things that work with push them even further
and it's over time over a period of four five six years
that you see
beautiful sort of thing emerge
but if this ruling this
with sports
to try different things
but not just exploded
and be done with that but to create something important out there to create
make stuff
make this website make a speech to write stuff
you know and finally be shared with the work
i think that the guns critical
so i'm not upset would most likely personal story here of there's a new
genre parading underneath you know what it's worth cycle
as basically scientific portrait
and a witness target is that if you years ago by
son took some1
class somebody had to create a blog
and he created it and the computer forceful talk about it because
you know it was mandated ought to make a blog team made it it was done
and my daughters younger with three years and she said told them he has a
brother i don't have a blog has attended another blog
so then don't bother me set of a blog for
and that it was what you put in that is the george bernard shaw and i want to
talk about right
so she was at the time religious importers and what a direct support in
part of their system of putting up ones up there
and celebrating some which is good
and then schools dark abyss of over summer
so when school started she didn't have time to write on that much
but her science teacher had given her next record assignment given the plus an
extra consignment this was in sixth grade
that you should read the newspaper for some side-effects stories and reported
back to the plus
so i said how about you read the story and you write a poem about even before
the one back plus
that we've been doing a portrait of
so she liked that so she started writing these things go cycles
so here's an example of one that was what you look like a few years back
i blogged about it on my blog
like focuses so cool and somebody will be mugged august we could leave a
comment that he made a very happy
shot mash of course one of my blog and i follow this blog
he says how is it that this little girl is doing it and my students are not
doing it
so he made that an assignment for his high school biology students and they
started writing
these ports
and then they started visiting my daughter's reps and this is one of the
points written by
uh... one of his students
and the visited my daughter's website and left a comment or two when she was
so excited you can see that
for the high school reformers my blogshares
meant a lot of it
she's off the blog niki moore the blogs been dead for a year because now she's
on palladium you know stuff
directed to a little bit of lasted and i'm happy about that
but see the story doesn't stop here
this is what's are what i think is so interesting about the internet and the
word that we live in
there was that is a maths teacher
in the community college in california
so she said how is this the science people are having all this function laws
on the map llama
mathml my rights
so how come they're hoping they're not doing it in math
and suddenly they had all of these people around the world war writing
poetry about math idled if u because it just became the thing that you do rate
and now there is a wiki out there which has plunged by a whole variety of people
on mathematics
think about the chain of circumstance that leads to them
peg it started with my just finding something to keep her busy in some
i got the paradox
prime motivation is really patrick or do you keep them busy
and out of trouble
learning and all that stuff can happen you know if it happened that's good but
developed right right
and look at how would sort of those and grows and pin-ups of
so i think this this thing that we talk about the quality pedagogy of content i
think
they don't packing those differences exist only in our minds in some way
that it really is a boat engaging with ideas
with these tools because the offers the opportunity to do things
this idea of exploring creating and sharing i think the really important
somewhat digress a little bit at this point um... whatever time invited to the
progress of the warranty distant
but i didn't
uh... i think a little bit of a said we could do what i call it shameless plug
and you can see the blood of court rock where that would be a
and this is for uh... are our program uh... at michigan state university
you can find out what they go to that effect of an issue dot e_d_u_ anthony
email me
it's a master's program as well as it gets to program
if you've managed to talk to any of our grads you don't talk to them because
they are our best advocates and our best students and i see that absolute
confidence
uh... the students who come from
the international schools
because intently i find the people who are teaching international schools are
consistently risk-takers
and then beget forty of forty-five or fifty of them together
this overseas of this summit in dublin
they've done it in france we've done it in england
the gap
i mean these people are working living breathing eating together having a
wonderful thing but really engaging with
ideas of technology and pedagogy and content of this new tools and what we
can do with them
it's very very exciting
uh... we also have an on campus
uh... face-to-face hybrid version as well as for the online version
but i think many of you might be interested in the overseas version if
you are drop me emailed and i can get you more information
and i'm really proud of this program
uh... i think that
uh... we have
fleet of mine from the evidence visit and observance
this summer and she said that i don't think there's a program like this about
because it's a very intense
very engaging
uh... program and i'm very proud of it if you buy that interested in that
always been interested in this which is a new hybrid p_h_d_ program
which is if you're working for payment wanted a p_h_d_
you can do it but coming to campus ons in summer for a couple of weeks
and roster that you're doing online
we just admitted a new cohort i think
this is the best for heart of the eighty students we've had excellent record
practitioners working in the field
uh... and we have
very grateful from the cell
that's the end of my
so summing up
we live in a new ecology
a standard solutions
don't exist really
creativity in some sense is the only solution that we have
and we need to consider the filled with us
which is keeping
and to get there
not fool magic
but rather a playful process repurposed thing
existing tools
so this is not cold wind in new bottles
its new boggled its new wind i think it's very exciting for that reason
well and lets this uh... there's a commercial that
givaudan tv a few years ago
and somebody send it to me and i think a lot of the decatur source of
forwarding it each other
and a solid commercial and
forces not just of my kids and the more i thought about it
something border devoted
and so i wrote a blog post and then somebody came and told me the topic
today make a few
here's somebody who's
showing you a video and you everything about it
so i'd tube as a challenge and made a mashup
to reflect my views so first i'd say the advertisement
and then we'll follow that
with my mashup
i stand before you today
troop
assistantships
height
fail compusa world world gets peace everyday
mud educational systems the dishes
stanford tradition
customs come
stuff
st
cust
'cause
the chip
though the commercial
something but not right and this is the age of the mashup
says migration
assistantships
systems the in tradition
so i think these three words really
i don't think we can predict what the future is going to be like and how we
can you know what's the right way of doing things many times
but i think has long as we keep
exploring creating it sharing i think being a word of mouth were
unlock good
can happen boards for process professionals and for
uh... the people in her care
started with these two quotes in the beginning on the picnic and his mother
look
unifying vision matters even more and i think that that is even more true
uh... today
so thank you very much that's been a pleasure being here so
and
