hi this is Larry Jordan this is an excerpt of a recent power-up webinar
called asked Larry anything where i get to answer questions
from viewers
for instance this one
The question bob hargreaves asks
can i run through the best workflow to keep all media connected when moving
events and projects between editors in different locations? Is it better to copy
files to the final cut pro ten folder on import or link them in a separate
folder?
This is really simple
which isn't small files but it's really simple. Let me show you.
I store all of my events and all of my projects for final cut pro ten on my
second drive
events are stored inside the folder called final cut events
and projects are stored in a folder called final cut projects
in order for an event meaning media or a project meaning how that media is edited
to be viewed at by final cut
it must be stored in the final cut Events or
final cut projects folder
so if i want to move media from one computer to another or from one editor
to another
i need to move the entire folder that contains that media this is the name of
the Events inside final cut
and all Events are always stored in your final cut events
folder
this is the name of all the projects that i'm working on currently inside
final cut
projects have multiple components
but all those compliments restored inside a single folder and that's the
name of your project inside
final cut so if i want a move events
i simply copy
the entire folder from computer one to computer 2
making sure to always put eevents inside the final cut events folder
making sure to always put projects inside the final cut projects folder
as long as you're moving the entire folder that contains the project of the
entire folder that contains the video you're not going to have any problems
the problem occurs if you only copy a part of the folder then the database
that that's inside that folder may or may not be updated you're gonna have
stuff break
the second problem and the bigger problem is that final cut ten is not
currently designed to have multiple people in the same project at the same
time
nor
it is not designed to have
two editors in two different geographic locations working on the same project at
the same time
because there's no way
to reconcile those two project versions
so if you're going to save multiple editor editors are working inside final
cut pro the way that you have to do it is you have to have one editor working
in the project
get out of the project quit it get final cut
move the project over to a different editor have that editor opened up
because his soon if you start to have 2 editors inside the same project file at
the same time even at two different geographic locations
you're not gonna be able to reconcile those changes
Is there a way in final cut pro ten
to save a project and collect the video and audio files
and uh...
uh... yeah what you do - absolutely
In other words can we
can we collect everything into a single fold of the answer's yes i'll show you
how
so let's say just hypothetically
that i want to collect this music video
right mouse click on the project name in the project library
and notice it says to duplicate project
when you duplicate project this allows you to duplicate the project or
duplicate the project and the reference events or
duplicate the project and the
the used clips
This allows you to add all the used clips or only the multicam clips
the benefits of this is this now is going to create a single location
which duplicates your project files to book a tour event files and puts them
all in one spot so you can archive them
you can also get there the same way by selecting the project, go up to file
duplicate project keyboard shortcuts commander d
you've got the same choices
it defaults to duplicating the project only, because you want to back up
everything. You want to duplicate the project and
used clips. You can give it a name and give it a location
if you know you're going to be sharing media between two editors
then you wanna make sure that that media is stored inside the final cut events
folder
and not pointed to different folders 'cause as soon as you point to
different folders
when you copied the event folder
the links are going to point to the folder on system one
and that will never have the same path name as the links to the same folder
on system to because the hard discs will probably be named different in the source
disc is probably named different
so if you need to move video or media between two different editors
copy it into the final cut events folder
and then copy the folder back-and-forth now that media file is
going to be really big. This is probably going to work the best when you're not
constantly adding media because then did it because we haven't of copy all those
files across
my feeling is have one editor be responsible for the project until
all the media has been ingested
then copy that media folder over and give it to the second editor
things get really really complex when you try to have multiple people trying
to work on the same files at the same time
final cut right now is designed to be one editor working at the project at
once
Robert asks: can you run through the best workflow to keep all media connected
when moving events projects between editors in different locations
you know we talked about that a little bit earlier
so here's the short answer
when you're working with final cut ten
all of your events are stored inside the final cut events folder in a folder
named after your event
all of your projects are stored inside the Final Cut project folder in a folder
named after your project
if you're moving events between editors you need to move the entire events
folder which can be really really big
if you're moving projects between editors you not only need to move the
project folder the entire folder not just the material inside it but move the
entire folder named exactly as it is
but you also need to move any events
that are feeding media into that project you need to move them both
now the first thing that people say is well cant I go inside to select a piece of
it and the answer is no
because this database which is tracking your edit shows everything that's
inside though project folder if you start to move pieces the database isn't
updated it doesn't know where media is
but here's the other big trap
and the big trap is if i have two editors
working on the same project at the same time in two different geographic
locations
there's no way to reconcile those two projects i can't put 'em back together
again so that means one editor has to work on it
and then you ship the project file to the other editor of the other editor
works on a ship to file back you can't have two editors working on the same
project at the same time
you can't reconcile the two
so for events move the entire folder and store it inside final cut events if it's
not inside a final cut events folder
final cut cannot find it
move the projects by moving the entire folder
if you don't move the entire folder and the if you don't store it inside final cut
projects final cut pro ten won't be able to find the file
