Mencap's support services are focused on helping people achieve
the life they want, through people supporting them in the right way.
Mencap can provide the care and support they need in a flexible way,
from just a few hours a week to 24 hours support each day.
My name is Sam Coots;
I have been a Mencap support worker for about five years now.
One of the people that I support is a 75 year old lady, who is registered blind.
Her name is Cynthia Norris.
She loves to go to the park, and she will listen to the birds and smell the flowers.
Cynthia's favourite past time is shopping and knitting.
She loves to cook and bake cakes,
really anything that she can offer to other people.
She is a really generous lady;
she loves to be really generous to other people.
Cynthia just loves going out and doing things,
and knowing that she has done something for herself,
like going to the bank and signing her paying in slip,
or she's baked a cake, or she's peeled the potatoes for dinner.
She just loves that. I suppose it's that sense of 'I've done that; I achieved that'.
My names James McEwan,
and I'm a support worker at Aspen Lodge in Haywards Heath,
and I'm a key worker to Darren here.
I'm involved in all aspects of Darren's care.
I support Darren to go into the local community, to the local shop.
I support Darren with his purchases.
I supported Darren to a Fat Boy Slim concert back in June.
Darren had a great time. Everybody was so kind to Darren,
we didn't experience any hostility, everybody was really helpful.
I've supported Darren to Brighton and Hove Albion football matches.
Darren really enjoys the experience. I think he enjoys the crowd,
the sound of the crowd, it's full of colour.
Mencap offers personal services for people with a learning disability,
as well as their families and carers, to lead the lives they choose.
