Hello, I'm Shahram Forutan. I'm a World Champion in Powerlifting.
Today we meet a friend of mine.
His name is Peter Dubberstein
and he is one of the best Archers in Germany.
Since I need a good Posture,
Breathing Technique and Concentration in my Sport
he recommended me to try Arching
because it is a good exercise
for the things I mentioned.
Meaning Breathing Technique, Posture and Concentration.
So let's go see how it goes.
He will teach me how to do it.
Hello, I'm Peter Dubberstein.
I'm a Archer since 10 years.
In 2008 I won the Championship in Hamburg (Germany)
and since 7 months I own this Indoor Arching Place
where you can just visit and shoot
by renting a Arching Lane.
Without having to be in a Arching Club.
You can just come here to have fun.
You told me Arching is good for Breathing, Posture and Concentration.
Now I'm here. Please tell me how to do this.
Ok, let's start then.
This is the Shooting Line.
Do not go over it as long as someone has a bow in his hand
because the arrows are actually sharp
and accidents could happen while someone is on the lane.
That would not be good, right?
I can imagine.
This is basically my only rule here.
This is a arm protection in case the string hits you forearm.
It could hurt really bad.
You are right handed, right?
Yes.
Ok, it will be placed on your left arm.
Are there different Bows?
There are different bows.
This one is a beginner bow.
The limbs are not too strong
and by the way your shooting technique
must be automated in your head
without having to think about it
so you can always shoot a good group.
Always the same procedure:
Pulling, letting go, beathing and concentrating.
So you always use three fingers?
Yes right, three fingers.
The arrows have colored feathers like red, blue or green
and always one white feather in between.
You place the arrow between the two nocking points
and lay it down.
Now you don't have to do anything
like holding the arrow and stuff like that.
The arrow holds itself.
What's up with the white feather?
This is the "*** feather".
It always has to point to your forearm.
When the arrow starts flying out
it will fly out clean without disturbance.
If you place the arrow this way
it is possible that the white feather touches the bow
and the arrow wobbles around.
So always place it how I explained.
Hold the bow like that.
Do not hold it with the pressure on your thumb.
Hold it so the pressure goes through the whole hand.
The pressure has to go through to the arm.
And you stand like that right?
Right, shoulder wide like that
so you stand stable.
You just look into the yellow pinehole.
It's like can throwing.
Either you hit or don't hit.
You basically just watch the target and throw.
Here you let the bow trhrow for you.
Just look at the yellow middlepoint
lift up the bow...
...one finger above, two fingers under.
When you pull: point the elbow upwards.
Don't point it downwards because you can't pull properly.
Elbow up
and your middle finger has to touch your mouth corner.
Still watching the target...
...pull back..
..let go.
What's with the breathing technique? How do I breathe?
It's like in Bodybuilding
when you work it you breathe out.
Most people breathe in
but everybody finds his own style after time.
I personally breathe out
so I don't have too much air in my thorax.
So, breathe out when I pull?
Yes, right.
...then hold the breath and shoot..
How I said most people breathe in but I breathe out.
This is just my style.
In my opinion you have too much air
in your chest
and you begin to shake.
So I breathe out, hold it, let go
and slowly breathe in afterwards.
Do I have to hold the bow very tight?
Your hand just has to be fixed on there
with the fingers going around.
Not super tight.
When you pull, the bow holds well already through pressure
but if you release, it could fall down
so just hold slightly.
So let's see...
I'm excited to start.
Me too, I can't wait to see you in action.
Now hold the bow and come forward.
Split the legs a little bit. Perfect.
Take an arrow.
Put it here.
White feather outside.
Perfect.
Now aim by just concentrating for the yellow spot.
Both eyes open.
Only concentrate for the yellow spot.
Do not aim through the arrow peak or something.
We don't have a aiming sight.
You only look at yellow
and you brain starts to notice
where you wanna go.
Here it's 12 meters.
You will slowly see how the arrows hit the target.
One finger above
and two fingers below.
The other fingers just hang there.
Now you pull to your mouth corner.
Pull pull pull pull pull..
Not too far.
Hold it into your face.
Just like that, Perfect.
A little bit higher.
Now release.
Well, that wasn't bad at all...
You can do it better.
Breathe out...
When you release do not pull back
just open your fingers.
This is my bow right here.
It has 40 pounds.
Before you had a beginner bow with 18 pounds
to learn the pulling movement.
You can try out my bow.
It has 40 pounds...
...it comes from the american system..
..they do everything with pounds..
So 40 pounds means you pull like 20 kilos here in germany.
Now do the same procedure again.
It's a little harder to pull now.
It's actually much harder.
Pull more, pull more, pull more.
Now release.
Your fingers hurt right?
It's a completely different story with this one.
But you realize that you start to shake...
Yes.
...because it's a unusual movement for you.
It's much harder to pull in comparison the other bow.
I notice it has much power when the arrow arrives.
With this bow the arrow flies 34 meters
before it begins to fall.
I don't need to hold the bow too high then..
Right.
...because it arrives straight.
I also started with 20 pounds
and built up the weight slowly.
You have to be able to master the whole procedure while sleeping.
Only focus on the target, concentrate
and everything else has to proceed automatically.
You're still focusing on what you do and how right now.
Peter, tell me what are these 3D animals for?
The 3D animals are my specialty.
These are hidden in the woods normally
and we do have worldwide championships for that.
You can live up your hunting instinct with those.
These are imported from america
and it's for practicing where to aim on the animal.
Normally the lounges and heart area.
So also offer hunting instinct training
so you can imagine how it is to hunt animals.
Ok, that's good regarding animal activists.
They don't mind if we shoot the 3d animals.
That's better anyway
because Bow Hunting is banned in germany.
Nevertheless you can live up your hunting instinct.
Great, can I try?
Yes, lets go!
Now the same thing again
but this time you don't focus on the yellow color.
Here you focus a little bit on the right of the foreleg
on the pig.
There is the heart-lounges area.
Ok, honestly I didn't understand what you mean.
I mean a little bit right of the front leg.
So there is the heart?
Theres is the heart and lounges.
You have to shoot there.
First, let me try to hit the pig.
A little bit higher. Now release.
You will starve today...
Lastly try to hit the big bison back there.
Ok, let me try.
Actually that's a good one because you can see it clearly.
It's big enough.
Well, now you can show me how to do it.
Hello, I'm Peter Dubberstein.
I'm a archer since 10 years
and I had...
Sorry...I hate it..
Sherry stop...
