The question today is what is dyslexia. Dyslexia is a word that comes from the Greek it literally
means difficulty "dis" with language "lexia." Dyslexia is a problem, it characterizes a
problem in learning language, both oral and written. Young children with dyslexia are
children we see who are slow to acquire spoken language, and often have difficulty well into
their school years. In school we notice particularly great difficulty at the beginning of their
school career, learning to deal with written language. That is reading words and spelling
words. Dyslexia occurs on a continuum of severity, by that I mean that some individuals have
a very, very mild case, and others may have a very severe case. Children with a very mild
case may not have difficulty learning to speak their language before school, and may have
difficulty first encountered when they come to school. Children with more sever levels
of difficulty will have the most difficulty learning the language, and then have severe
difficulty when they come to school.
