EGO: Also, before numbers and letters came into use,
different lines... cars... used different colored lights
mounted on top... of the roof.
Okay?
Those carried over into more modern cars,
and you'll see here...
they still have those lights built in right there...
[inaudible alert]
Can ya hear me, [inaudible]. You're missin' this.
MAN WITHIN CAR: You're missin' this!
[laughter]
EGO: Alright. Here... again.
Three seperate railroads make up the MTA...
sub- subway.
Can ya hear me [inaudible]
[inaudible]
Okay.
IRT was first... kay?
They took over the Manhattan Els.
And they [inaudible] built the first subway.
The BMT was second, they took over the old Brooklyn Els,
and they built their subway.
They were pri- both private companies.
The IND was a public company made by the city.
And looking at both comp- other companies,
they got their stuff right.
This is a good car, the R1.
Alright? Built in 1930.
All steel, as you can see...
And, the format... is what we use today.
Larger car, has 4 doors on each side...
and windows between, alright?
Now these're- these're single units, they have a cab at both ends.
Kay?
EGO: And...
BILLY: They can run 'em single.
EGO: Although the BMT
first used these marker lights,
to say wh- uh, what lane, or what line or [inaudible],
the IND perfected it by putting local 'n express,
as well as mentioning what line it runs on.
So let's take a look inside...
Also, the IND...
was the first, uh...
railroad to... split locking doors.
Opening... (in) half the time.
[inaudible]
EGO: Alright, moving on.
FEMALE: What're we talking about? Um...
MALE: Can I ask you a question, like [inaudible]?
Um... When I saw [inaudible] did they- what kinda bolts did they use?
MALE: Do they have-
EGO: Those're actually rivets.
Same thing they built uh... the
Empire State Building with.
They take a... long bolt with no threads on it.
Then they have a whole team get it ready.
And the [inaudible].
They got one guy heating it up, over a fire, with coal.
He picks it up with a blanket, not to burn his hand.
Throws it up to another guy who catches it with something else,
who then throws up it to the other guy,
who then catches it, with a rivet gun,
puts it in...
[inaudible]
Here...
Building a... subway car,
is more like building an airplane.
BILLY: Mhmm.
EGO: You do it in a factory, it's a safer setting,
So, you get a heat- hot rivet, you pound it in.
Good thing you asked me about that,
cuz these cars...
are loaded with rivets.
EGO: If you look-
BILLY: Everywhere.
EGO: Everywhere
BILLY: All over them.
MALE: But still, like, imagine like, it's the old days.
If they were gonna stop, they could accidentally get hurt.
EGO: Oh yeah, oh yeah. Alright, um...
