DH: This is an artwork form Leon Frederic 1897; it is called Nature or Abundance. In
this artwork I see a young woman and four children in a peaceful place. It seems to
her that the sky I think it would be an image of what haven is. There covered with colorful
flowers and fruit its makes it seem like a peaceful place. The flowers and the fruit
it makes you feel like a peaceful place it's like the fruits and flowers are covering them
and protecting them from something and I think that the mother is protection the children
even though they might be going through rough times but again she's probably making them
feel like everything is going to be okay, what do you think?
CE: Well I think totally different from you, somewhat because I do see, I do see the mother
protecting her four kids I also see like half of her body is bright with the sun shining,
the flowers are blooming but on the other side is darkness, the sky is dark, the moons
out, I see that the flowers are dying on this side, and the fruit is also dying too, so
it's like good and bad. DH: Yeah now that you mention it I do notice
that, I do notice that, at first I thought it was just a darker shade, but I never thought
it would be that the dark side is the dark side and the left is just peaceful but now
that you do mention it I do see it, I didn't see it before, I think that's very interesting.
I also think that the painting is trying to say that maybe it's okay, that everything
is going to be okay, that probably God is illuminating them, and even though there probably
going thru dark times, that everything is going to be okay, and I find it interesting
that the right side could be the dark side and that on the left side it could be something
good and it also makes it seem very peaceful and it makes me feel that no matter what how
what problems you could be facing that there's always something good, something good that
will protect you in those dark rough times. CE: See what I see, I see that this artwork
could have meant to somebody as poverty, like somebody who was going thru times on one side
to where maybe she didn't have enough to take care of four kids and that's why only two
are more nourished then the other two because it doesn't even seem like they have clothing,
they have grass as clothing, like a vale. Half of the body makes me secure and the other
half makes me feel sad and depressed because it just really doesn't seem like they have
much, its just like a darkness on the other side.
DH: Yes this painting actually makes me feel that the love of a mother is so big and can
pretty much do anything to protect her children of anything bad that could ever happen or
make it seem like nothing's going on and that everything is peaceful that's what I think.
I don't know maybe I don't know if you've noticed but the shapes of the fruits and the
flowers are example of a form of a painting and it's also very colorful with all the stuff
is very colorful, what do you think? CE: Well I see that too, and I see the value
on the sky from light to dark and also on this side its from dark to light. There's
a lot of value going on, on the fruit too especially on the shy.
DH: Oh yeah that's right. From my experience in interoperating this artwork, Nature or
Abundance it made me realize that maybe it means that maybe living in the right side
of the painting and which is the dark side maybe it means what were living in now and
the left which is everything peaceful, colorful everything seems to be light maybe it's what
an afterlife would be and if it is she would love to be a part of it.
CE: Like you mentioned the dark side I really do see that on this side it makes me feel
like if you do bad I guess you're going to go to the dark side and not live as good as
the good side which is the light side. Its either you do good or bad, and then you go
to a good or bad place. DH: I agree with you and I see it now what
the artist is trying to say and now that I that the shades reflect the children are the
four seasons fall, spring, summer, and winter. Now I see it clearly and the mother is just
the Goddess, what do you think? Yes according to the museum that's interpretation
of the painting. CE: Yes I was completely wrong of how I saw
this painting, I see the four seasons now from the spring, summer, fall, and winter.
I have more understanding of what the artist wanted us to see now that I read what the
museum had to say, and I see how it changes from spring to summer and summer to fall and
fall to winter I understand the painting more DH: Yes I agree with you, now I have a clear
picture of what the meaning is for this painting and I really had a great time interoperating
this painting with you. CE: Me too it was a very interesting painting
and our perspectives were very different and helped us understand our views.
