Hello, Mr. William.
Hello, Jane?
We would still be shaking hands if we were from the United Arab Emirates.
Oh! Didn't you just get back from there?
Yes! Would you like to hear more about doing business there?
I guess I've got some time.
Well first, they greet eachother very formally--paying special attention to titles.
That explains why you were acting so differently!
One important aspect I learned is that women have not traditionally been part of the business world in UAE until fairly recently.
Because of this, some men are hesitant to do business with women.
What sorts of things do they do?
Some men won't offer handshakes to women. They avoid eye-contct with us as well. Due to cultural taboos, it is important for women doing business in UAE to dress conservatively and be fairly reserved.
Wow. I had no idea. Go on.
Respecting one's elders is also very important.
If an older individual walked into the room it is common for everyone to stand.
When introducing a group of people, the eldest are introduced first.
Older individuals are also the first to be served during a meal.
I wish I had that to look forward to.
Building personal relationships with those one is doing business with is also a major identity if their culture.
How so?
They often build true friendships through transacting with one another.
Before doing any business, it's not uncommon for two people to sit down and get to know each other during their first meeting.
Why is this so important to them?
They believe trust and honor to be important qualities in business.
Because of this, they feel it is essential to find these qualities before doing any business.
That sure would make business a lot easier.
Their business meetings are crazy too!
How so?
It takes a lot of patience to sit through a UAE business meeting.
They take a very long time to examine every possible angle before making any decisions.
To slow things down even more, meetings are often interrupted to answer phone calls, check emails, and even for visits from family members!
I can't imagine grandma popping in to say "Hi" during a business meeting, that's crazy!
Anything else?
The work week in UAE is actually Sunday through Thursday.
This is because Friday is their day of worship.
Which religion is most commonly practiced in UAE?
Islam. I suggest doing some research on the religion before going over there.
I certainly will!
Well, now you know just about as much as I do about UAE business culture.
I would say you're ready to travel there for business!
[LAUGHTER]
Thanks for the valuable information, Miss Jane!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
