Dr. Massry on Dr.90210 _ Video 2 - Part 2 Very careful, so that you donít cut through
something you donít want to. Look down at your toes, now up way out at the ceiling.
Down at your toes, keep looking down. At this point, Iím identifying the muscle that elevates
the upper eyelid. So basically we found the muscle that lift the eye and now weíre going
try to reconnect to the cartilage of the upper eyelid so he can open his eye and have a more
normal appearance.
Right now weíre putting in this prosthetic eye, which we are going to insert over Landonís
existing eye. This gives us a sense for how the eye will close and the permanent prosthetic
will fit over this eye.
Hey Landon, could you open your eyes as wide as you can and look up here?
Follow my finger? Very good. So this is the first time Landon has ever been able to look
up and both of his upper lids track together.
If you remember before, when he looked up, the lid wouldnít move. Now they do move,
and itís reattached. Heís been phenomenal letting us do this.
I think we did ok here.
You are all done, you did your part. Now you get to be asleep for the other half. Weíre
very lucky because all the supporting structures around the eye are intact. The bluish tissue
is his actual eye.
Landon is a unique case because he decided to keep his eye. At this point the eye doesnít
function or see. Heís hoping that sometime in the future, weíll come up with some innovation
that will allow us to reverse this process so that his eye could function again. In our
current state of medical knowledge, I donít believe that he will regain vision in that
eye. I believe the eye will continue to shrink and there will come a time when he finally
decides to remove it. Iím now creating a pocket on the inner portion
of the lower lid so that we can create a space for his temporary prosthesis to fit. Iím
now harvesting the tissue graft from the roof of his upper mouth. The graft is going to
give some support to the lower lid internally and help lift it, because itís too low. This
is our graft guys. The lining tissue in the mouth that is hard, I need the hardness to
give its support. Iím now placing it on the inner aspect of
the lower lid.
So think of this as heís put a spacer in the lining of his eye to make a deeper pocket.
If youíve ever put a contact, you pull your eye back and thereís a pocket there. He didnít
have enough pocket, so now he has a deeper pocket and his lower lid comes up higher.
Letís see where we are. So externally you canít tell, he had all that stuff done. Now
take a look how normal that looks.
After we placed the graft then we close the lower lid incisions. Pulling the lower lid
up and securing it to the forehead prevents the scar tissues from pulling it downward
and pulls opposite the way the scar will fall. Landonís surgery went extremely well today,
weíre really thrilled with the results.
The next step is probably in around a month or so, heís going to be fit with a prosthesis
which is the painted eye and I think heís going to do great.
Alright Landon, you did phenomenal. You are a real trooper, you helped us. We couldnít
have done it without your help. So we put everything in the right place, now itís all
about healing.
Hi Landon, how are you?
Good, doing good.
Look at you. What do you think?
I like it, itís so much better.
You can tell the difference already even though you got that stitch in your face? Well you
donít mind if we take that out, do you?
No.
Okay. Excellent.
What Iím going to do is, look up at the ceiling for me.
Youíre going to work on the lower part, Iím going to work on the higher part.
You know, I look at Landon and I say to myself whatís unique about him. First of all, this
kid lost his eye at a young age. He doesnít hold a grudge, heís not angry about this.
I mean, he had surgery and stayed awake. How many of you could say youíd stayed awake
during surgery? He perseveres. Itís going to be a long road for him.
The difference is pretty remarkable.
If you look at the shape of your eye, itís almond shaped again. Now, this eye and that
eye donít quite perfectly match, but what weíll find is, over the next month or so,
thatís going to settle a little bit and as it does I think youíll be pretty close to
right on. I think you can have a new eye refitted for you in about a month or so.
Weíre very happy with the outcome at this point.
Iím ecstatic, you know? This could have been a very difficult outcome for him and so far
heís just flown through and itís gone really well.
You did a good job.
Well thank you, you havenít even seen the final result yet.
I know
I think Landon at a very young age has faced a challenge and conquered it in ways that
very few have. In essence, he is a hero. He certainly is mine.
Alright Landon, it was great.
Appreciate it.
Alright.
Well Landon, is your senior year. Are you getting exited?
Yes Maíam.
You are going to have a lot of fun and then you get to start a whole new chapter in your
life.
Itís been 2 months since my surgery. Iíll be graduating high school soon and going off
to college.
Now tell me, do you know what you want to major in?
Iím thinking law, maybe.
Thatís a good one.
Today Iím taking a tour of Troy University with the vice-chancellor . Iíll be going
from my high school of about 150 kids to a college with 7,000. Thatís going to be a
big change.
Are you at least a bit interested in maybe even the international law?
Maybe, I havenít really decided what type of law yet.
Well thatís ok, you have plenty of time and you may change your mind even though what
type of law.
I feel a lot more confident now and people first impression of me when they meet me since
Iíve had the surgery and my prosthesis made. Right after the accident I didnít know what
to expect because of how bad it looked at first. Iím very glad that we found Dr. Massry
and Dr. Cassileth. I was really happy with how my eyelids and everything looked after
surgery. This eye reconstruction is just amazing and I never thought it could turn out this
good. This is just a dream come true.
Are you planning on living at home or on campus?
Iíd like to keep him at mine. I think that Landon has a bright future ahead of him because
his confidence is back now and his back to his own self.
Landon is like a new man.
He looked pretty good.
Tonight we are having a party at my house for my 18th birthday. My friends were amazed
that how I looked just like before.
It looks awesome, looks like an eye.
Looks really good.
Itís like a contact or?
Kind of like a, I guess you could say that but a big, hard contact.
It looks great, it looks like it did before, it doesnít look any different. Nobody even
notices it anymore.
After going through all these surgeries and the accident and everything that came about
after it, I think itís made me a stronger person.
Iím looking forward to getting out and see how Ö
