Boys Town National Research Hospital
has a national mission. Our mission is to change the way America cares for
children.
So to do that we've engaged in what is called translational research.
Not only do we provide clinical services but we surround those clinical services
with research. The clinician and scientists interact here at Boys Town
National Research Hospital to
answer the question, how to improve the care of children.
We are very specialized and we go deep in our services.
The Boys Town Ear,Nose and Throat Institute includes a variety of services
and research. Services such as the physician's clinics,
three different locations within the Omaha and Council Bluffs area.
"Say the word cowboy," our hearing and balance center would include
the testing of hearing, the fitting of assistive devices such as hearing aids
for all ages
as well as balance issues. Services such as the center for childhood deafness, would
include
cochlear implants, the preschool program, all the services that surround families
when a child is identified at
birth with a hearing loss. Cochlear implants is without
a doubt the most rewarding thing that I get to participate in.
She's never going to hear my voice. She's never going to hear her sister singing
the lullabies to her.
When she first heard her first sound, we were so happy we didn't even cry if that
makes sense.
"Hi Daddy!" "Chloe chair?" "Yeah!"
"Daddy!" "Yeah, Daddy's watching you listen."
It's been a year and
I wouldn't have ever guessed that she was putting
three, four words together. She verbalizes in words
what she wants. The words she uses,
you know, are tough words and she'll just rattle them off it's just amazing to think
that
noy very long ago that was not possible. Being able to provide
enough hearing for the child to develop speech and hearing,
I mean, that a miracle. My dream has come true
and that's because of them.
Good girl, those eyes look perfect.
Boys Town Pediatrics includes general pediatric care
as well as specialty care for children. We provide care for children because we
understand that the general health of a child
has a dramatic impact on their ability to be successful in life.
We have amazing accessibility and availability to our patients
this is like nothing I've ever seen in other clinics literally 24 hours day
there's a nurse you can talk to or a hotline operator, front desk staff, who
can schedule your appointment with a physician.
There are doctors available if you need to talk to them in the middle of the night as well,
and we have amazing provider access, our patients basically can see a doctor from
8 a.m. till 10 p.m. almost seven days a week.
The residential treatment center program is the highest level on the continuum of
care that Boys Town provides.
We see lots of kids with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety
disorders,
and other disruptive behavior disorders such as ADHD and conduct disorder,
To bring them in and have them work on their treatment, to give them a more
secure sense of belonging and work on their treatment so that they can
successfully reintegrate into a family style setting,
is what we do. We have 24-hour nursing
in this particular facility, two child and adolescent psychiatrists who work very
closely with our children
to provide oversight, medication management,
and to help approve the treatment for each individual child.
Here at Boys Town a number of research projects are going on
and our work is particularly focused on helping children
and families. A good example that would be the development of the software
that is used in newborn hearing screening throughout the United States.
Another example would be the development of methods to fit infants with hearing aids.
Our researchers discovered that the earlier you can intervene in a child's
life
the more impact you can have on helping that child reach their full potential.
I think what makes
Boys Town so great is I'm surrounded by front desk staff
and nurses and other doctors who love being here and that makes taking care of
patients that much more fun.
It's very rewarding work in a place that where you can see
the projects go all the way from the bench to the bedside.
Everything is always new and exciting here
and I find working with patients
very challenging and rewarding
and I feel like we're providing very focused and personal service.
For me working at Boys Town National Research Hospital is all about the
mission. It is so satisfying
every day to come to work knowing that we are not only helping children here in
the Omaha
area but impacting how care is delivered across the United States.
The challenge we have before us is that our mission never ends
but that's why we come to work every day. To improve care,
to change the way America cares for children families and communities.
