Fancy Creek Shooting Range at Tuttle Creek Reservoir is one of the state’s premier
public gun ranges. Dubbed a “no-blue-sky” range because of overhead, gravel-filled baffle
construction, it’s nearly impossible for a bullet to escape this safe enclosure. Fancy
Creek is popular for target shooters and hunters alike.
The range has existing 25-, 50- and 100-meter firing lines and built in shooting benches.
Construction is now underway on another 50-meter range at this facility. It is expected to
be completed in the next few weeks. Fancy Creek requires a range master to direct
the action of multiple shooters. Members of the Friends of Fancy Creek Range operate,
maintain and volunteer to staff the facility, so it’s open only at designated times. Firearms
of all kinds are permitted for stationary targets.
Many serious competitive shooters use Fancy Creek Range to fine-tune precision shooting,
like *** Lundquist of Manhattan. He shoots iron sights and produces dime-sized groups
with a .22 at 50 meters. Other shooters simply use the range to zero their big game rifles
prior to hunting season. Kansas shooters are lucky to have fine public
facilities like Fancy Creek Shooting Range. The Range, located in Tuttle Creek’s Fancy
Creek State Park near Randolph at Hiways 77 and 16, requires a daily park vehicle permit
to access. The range is open the first and third weekends, and the fourth Thursday of
every month. Hours are 10 am - 5 pm, May-Sept, and 10 am - 4 pm, Oct-Apr. Cost is $10 per
day. I’m Mike Blair for Kansas Wildlife and Parks.
