Hello, this is Carlos Navas from Spain and this lesson is for week 3 of Introduction
to Music Production at Coursera.org
I will be teaching how to record automation in Studio One.
First of all, we will talk about the two most used recording automation modes: latch and
touch.
In latch mode every parameter we change will remain its value until the end of the recording,
and instead of that we have the touch mode that is like an overdub kind of recording,
so when we stop recording the parameter will recover the last value of the previous recording.
Let´s see this with an example. We will start recording a volume automation for a bass track
selecting latch mode. Down the fader we can select the recording automation mode
I have selected latch and now we open the automation editor to see the changes we are
making.
I will press the record button and record a fade down and up for the track.
Now we will change to touch mode and see the differences between them.
We select touch mode and start recording I´ll take up the fader a bit and as you can
see in the editor the only thing it has changed is the fade up I have done
in touch mode but when I stop recording that fade up it continues fading down like
the previous recording.
Now let´s hear the automation recorded in the bass track.
It starts with the fade out recorded in latch mode, now the fade up in touch mode and it
continues fading down and fading up recorded in latch
mode.
Instead of recording automation, we can manually edit lines. So we have the eraser tool and
the pencil tool.
With the eraser tool we can remove undesired dots from the recorded automation and with
the pencil tool we can manually draw the line desired for the automation
track. So I can manually draw a series of fades down and up and let´s hear how it sounds.
You can see the fader moving as the line goes up and down.
That´s all. I hope you enjoyed it and thanks for watching
