Hi. I'm Pete Shumlin, Governor of Vermont. I want to ask for your help with a project
that's incredibly important to Vermont and to our future. Button Up Day is October 5th.
As you know, Vermont has done an extraordinary job over the years figuring out how to do
electric energy efficiency, using less electricity to get us farther and to reduce our bills.
Candidly, we've done a pretty god awful job when it comes to thermal efficiency in our
homes, ensuring that we button up our older homes, replace windows, insulation - do the
things that we know will keep the heat inside for mostly oil driven and other carbon emitting
heating sources. We have a goal in Vermont that by 2020, we need to insulate and make
more efficient 80,000 homes across the state, and I'm asking you to help us with Button
Up Vermont. Why is efficiency so important? We know from Irene and other storms that climate
change is upon us in this state and on this planet. Vermonters spend hundreds of millions
of dollars every single year by basically letting oil and fossil fuel driven heat leak
out of our old buildings, forcing us to reach into our pockets to pay for oil at high prices
where if we just used less or had more efficient buildings, we would save those dollars. So
there's two reasons why Button Up Vermont is so important and why we need your help:
first is, it puts money in your pocket. Second, it makes our planet more livable for future
generations. So please join us. We would love to have your help.
