Speaker 1: Once nicknamed the Dutch Mastiff, the Pug is a small dog with a wrinkled face,
short legs, and barrel chest. Speaker 2: Pugs are actually one of the oldest
breeds, dating back as early as 400 B.C. They originated over in the Orient, similar to
the Pekingese. They were used as palace dogs. They are the pet of the Buddhist Monasteries.
Speaker 3: The Pug dog was brought back to Holland by the Dutch and that's how we started
to get it bred as we know it today. Speaker 2: The Pug is actually described as
the phrase of multum in parvo, which means a lot of dog for a small space.
They are very popular with families. Women, men, children fall in love with their antics.
They are adorable and they fit well into apartment living.
Speaker 1: Regular cleaning and drying of the Pug's coat is necessary to prevent skin
infections, especially in the dog's facial wrinkles.
Speaker 3: Another issue with Pugs are the skin rolls. People don't realize that those
have to be cleaned regularly, otherwise they can become infected.
Speaker 2: The Pug doesn't require a lot of high maintenance. You do want to make sure
their coats are regularly cared for. They do tend to dry out. You want to make sure
their little curly tails are clean because they can collect matter in them.
Speaker 1: The Pug has had various names throughout the years, including Mops Hund in Holland,
Chinese or Dutch Pug in England, and Mops in Germany. But the word Pug is thought
to have come from the Latin pugnus meaning fist and attributed to his clenched-fist-like
head. Speaker 2: As Pugs have been evolving in breeding,
unfortunately, their faces have become shorter and that does lead into breathing problems.
Pugs are not great dogs to bring outside on humid days for over-activity because you will
hear them as a little cute Pug snort can develop into serious breathing problems and, if they
have an allergic reaction to anything, it could result in anaphylactic shock.
Speaker 3: The Pug is a great dog with kids. They have a wonderful sense of humor. They're
sturdy and small and a very fun-loving breed. Speaker 1: To learn more about Pugs and meet
