Making video infographics with PowerPoint. In this presentation I'll be talking about
8 tips for video infographic design with PowerPoint. Tip number one look at many examples. What
I'm talking about are infographics that you can find online. There are tons of examples
that you can look at for inspiration and ideas simply do a Google image search and you'll
find plenty. Study how they're created the shapes that are used how they're laid out
and so forth. It will give you a lot of ideas for things that you might want to try with
your own infographic project. Tip number two choose a suitable topic. Now after you've
looked at a bunch of examples you may have a topic in mind. But remember that an infographic
is a visual depiction of data information or knowledge. So whatever topic you choose
should be a visual one. In other words it should be possible to represent that information
in a visual form using a lot of diagrams and graphic elements. Tip number three draw in
PowerPoint. And I think this is kind of interesting if you're PowerPoint user. If you've owned
PowerPoint for years you already know that we have all of these basic shapes that we
can draw with in PowerPoint. We can combine these elemental shapes to make all kinds of
complex diagrams. For example we could take rounded rectangles a circle and some lines
and create a little person like you see on many different kinds of infographics. There
is no end in sight really of the kinds of things that you can do. You're limited only
by your own imagination to some extent. Now there's probably something that you won't
be able to do but there are many things that you can do with basic shapes to create these
little drawings that are suitable for infographics. Tip number four use clip art with care. Try
searching for clip art illustrations. You know those cartoonish line art types of clip
art and then choose simple clip art with an infographic look. Make sure that it adds to
your infographic that it offers a visual depiction of the information that you're trying to share
with that infographic. So it is possible to use clip art. Just be very selective. Tip
number five apply CARP principles. This is contrast alignment repetition and proximity.
So with contrast we have light elements on a dark background and dark elements on a light
background as you see with these two little people diagrams. With alignment we tried to
align text and graphics so that they're nice and neat. Left alignment usually works pretty
well for text as opposed to center alignment when you have big blocks of text but experiment
so that things are nicely aligned. Repetition we strive toward consistent design in fonts
colors layouts and so forth. If you've been watching as I go through this presentation
I've used consistent colors. The tip star up in the left corner is the same on each
one. The banner is the same on each one. So I'm doing my best to apply this idea of repetition.
Proximity means that we group or cluster information that belongs together. So when you're creating
your infographic you may have a cluster of graphics and maybe some simple text that go
together. And you group those. Put a little space between them and another group of information.
So that proximity tells us that this information belongs together as a group. Tip number six
animate for attention. Now we know that eyes naturally follow motion. So it's easy to follow
along with something that's moving on the screen and it helps draw attention. So we
use animation to guide viewer attention to the part of the screen that we want them to
be looking at in this particular moment. Simple animation is very easy to do in PowerPoint
so that's kind of a nice feature of this software. Tip number seven use voice with visuals. So
when you're giving a presentation either live or when you're recording a video as I am now
we use our voice to convey information. If we combine that with a lot of text it's very
difficult to read that text and listen at the same time. So we strive toward minimizing
the text using less and using big simple key phrases. Or even better increase the number
of visuals that we're using. Put that information in a visual form. It's much easier to listen
and look at a visual like a picture or a diagram than it is to try to listen and read a lot
of text on the screen at the same time. So use voice with visuals whenever you can. And
that falls in line with this whole infographic idea that we're turning information knowledge
data into a visual representation. And then when we combine that with our voice it works
very nicely. Tip number eight record the video. We do this right on the computer with your
PowerPoint presentation turned on and running. So use screen recording software such as Camtasia
or Screencast-O-matic. This will record everything that's on your screen and turn it into a movie.
Start the slideshow in PowerPoint then click through the presentation as if you were giving
it to an audience. Record the video and your narrations simultaneously. Of course you need
to have a microphone hooked up and working with this. Now Camtasia has a very nice plug-in
for PowerPoint that will help you record PowerPoint as a movie but you can use any screencast
recording software to record what's happening on your computer screen. Just start that PowerPoint.
Click through it. Record it. Record your narration. That's what I did to record this presentation.
All that's left after that is to produce or render the video and upload it to YouTube
or your favorite video sharing service. So today we took a look at just some big ideas
about video infographic design using PowerPoint. Try searching online for software tutorials
for your own version of PowerPoint or the screen recording software that you happen
to be using. There are quite a few tutorials out there for various versions of software.
So there's plenty to be found. Just do a Google search and you should be able to find something
to help you. Well that's all I have today. Thanks for watching. I hope you found this
information helpful. Good luck with your video editing projects. Goodbye for now.
