Jingle: Atlantic Dermatology ooo you're looking good!
Dr. Crane: Welcome to Atlantic Dermatology located in Wilmington, North Carolina. I'm
Dr. Crane, I'm a board certified dermatologist, and I'm here to talk about Melanoma. Melanoma
is a type of skin cancer, and it's a potentially deadly type of skin cancer if not caught in
time. It's becoming unfortunately more and more popular these days, meaning we're seeing
more and more patients with Melanoma. In the United States, well over one hundred thousand
people will be diagnosed with Melanoma this year, so basically the main message I want
to get out today is that everyone should be looking their skin over from head to toe on
a monthly basis and seeing a dermatologist on a yearly basis so we catch melanomas early.
If you have a mole that is asymmetrical, meaning one half looks different than the other; if
you have a mole with a jagged border; if you have a mole with several colors; or if you
have a mole larger than a pencil eraser; or are they evolving or changing; and if you
have a new mole, or a mole with any of those five features then you definitely want to
see your dermatologist about it. Melanomas, if you catch it early, its no big deal; if
you catch it late, thats when it becomes a big deal because with Melanomas, they start
out on the surface many a times, and they gradually go deeper, and the deeper they go,
that's when they become more deadly. So by looking yourselves over on a monthly basis,
catching these moles early, seeing your dermatologist on a yearly basis, and if something changes
seeing your dermatologist sooner, you'll probably catch the melanoma a lot earlier. If you wait,
it could be deadly, so really get in and see your dermatologist, and thank you for your
time!
