Connection technologies are playing a role redistributing power from hierarchies, including
the nation-state, including government, to citizens and networks of citizens. We’re
increasingly seeing power structures that aren’t top-down in nature, it’s not one
person inspiring and organizing the masses from on high. Increasingly leadership is looking
like the internet itself: like a network, like a web. Now this is not always the case
and this, to be frank, is not always a good thing. If you look in the countries that are
pivoting to democracy in North Africa, the absence of leadership that came out of some
of those protest movements leaves a gap often times. So what I see more than anything else
is a redistribution of power from hierarchies to citizens and networks of citizens.
