Saddle up, partner. Saddle up with Billy Bob.
What? You were expecting Marshal Matt Dillon?
Wrong Gun.Smoke, pal.
No, this has nothing to do with Gunsmoke the television show. Which, for all you kids out
there, ran for three decades...in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Thatís a long time. You can
thank Miss Kitty for that. Instead, Capcom gave us Billy Bob...a dude with two guns.
Miss Kitty had two guns, too...but...those were different guns.
And actually, this is Gun.Smokeóuh, which is actually written as gun dot smokeóas included
in the Capcom Arcade Cabinet. This game comes with the 1985 pack, which includes Section
Z and the classic Ghosts ën Goblins. Thatís a pretty awesome pack, and Gun.Smoke is a
pretty awesome game.
So this was originally released to arcades back inósurprise, surpriseó1985. It was
brought the NES three years later, it also ended up on the MSX...Gun.Smoke certainly
made its rounds. This, of course, is the original arcade version. Which is important to note,
because there were actually a lot of changes in the NES version.
Less levels, more weapons, different bosses...same dot, though.
And speaking of changes, the Capcom Arcade Cabinet adds a whole host of extra content
and modes. Thereís the original arcade game, but thereís also a score attack mode, a casual
mode, training, online leaderboards...actually, thatís one of the nice things about the cabinet.
Capcom did add stuff to these games.
And Gun.Smoke is another really nice repackaging.
As for the gameplay itself, well...come on, itís Gun.Smoke. This is like a shoot ëem
up without a plane or spaceship. Instead, youíre on foot. That alone made the game
kinda unique, as did its theme. Billy Bob is a bounty hunter from the old West, tracking
down villains throughout the frontier...dusty prairies, indian reservations, lawless towns.
Itís basically Young Guns: The Video Game, with less Emilio.
Gun.Smoke is one of my favorite Capcom arcade games. Itís really fun to play, and itís
the kind of game that appeals to a lot of different gamers. If you like shoot ëem ups,
this is basically Xevious on foot with indians. If you like top-down shooters like Commando
and Alien Breed, youíll love Gun.Smoke. Actually, I canít imagine any reason you wouldnít
like Gun.Smoke.
Unless youíre Pig Joe. Boy, heís gonna have a pretty explosive headache.
Itís Gun.Smoke for the PS3.
