UNMH Heart Failure Program
>>DR. BART ***: This disease is a leading cause of death, a tremendous cause of hospitalization
and it is incredibly expensive. There are over five million patients in this country
with heart failure, over 550 thousand new cases diagnosed a year.
>>SHARILYN WOLOSHUCK: Congestive heart failure has always been treated by cardiologists.
The difference is we are disease specific now, looking at congestive heart failure,
and we have zeroed in on exactly what needs to be done for these patients, who needs to
be involved, the follow up required.
>>MARY HAWKINS: Some of the symptoms of heart failure, some of them are very subtle. People
will say well, I just feel kind of tired and short of breath and I have a little bit of
swelling. And then they can have further exacerbations when they get really sick with gross swelling.
>>MARY HAWKINS: Yeah, I think there’s a lot of focus that’s going to be done in
the future and is being done now on preventative cardiology, which will help immensely, if
we can get people to take better care of themselves before they get heart failure, before they
get coronary artery disease.
>>DR. BART ***: One of the best ways to prevent heart failure is to find those things that
increase the risk for heart failure and then jump on them immediately. So if we can catch
this early, perhaps we can prevent hospitalization, prevent death, improve quality of life. And
for that reason, we’ve opened our doors in this clinic.
