Hi! My name is Dan and I’m here for Expert Village. Right now I’m going to talk about
what to do before you leave the site of your extinguished fire. Once you’re pretty sure
that it’s extinguished, it’s always good to make sure. You can stir your fire, making
sure you have lots of dirt and water. You want to stir it very well to make sure that
you break up and large chunks of ash that may be smoldering in the center. Be liberal
with your use of water. As the old saying goes, better safe than sorry. Before burying
any of your ashes, you want to make sure that they are in fact ashes and not coals. Make
sure that everything is saturated with water and that you’ve made sort of a slurry with
the soil and the ash. Also, before you bury it you want to feel with your hand if there
are any hot spots. You want to be careful when doing this, as if there is hot spot you
may burn yourself. Even if you think your fire is out, you still have some water, and
you have plenty of water near by, pour it all on. And one last time for good measure, give it
a good mix. Make sure your water can get down in there, and then you can either bury your
coals or scatter them. If you’re in a fire ring, you can leave them, and the next person
can use these ashes as coal when they relight a fire.
