Hi this is Laura Turner and today I want to talk with you about how to become an editorial
writer. So you want to write your own editorials for a newspaper but you are not sure how to
go about doing it. Well first of all you probably going to have to start from the bottom up
and you are going to have to start being a student of journalism and getting an internship
at that paper. So start from the very bottom and actually you know be the mail room clerk,
do what they need you to do and get to know those people in the newspaper so that you
can get a future job secured with them. So next you are going to actually move up from
being a student to being a reporter. And you are going to start reporting on you know very
small assignments and then eventually you are going to be able to work your way up to
becoming an editorial writer. And what you really need to think about this whole time
while you are going through the process of climbing the ladder is what is your big beef
with the world. What do you really love to write about and what do you really have a
strong opinion on and what can you create a whole column you know, a weekly column around.
And so you'll have something prepared and you, from when the time comes when they actually
ask you to be an editorial writer for the paper. And also think about you know what
does the paper need that they don't have. Do they not have a theater section or theater
critic that is of the right caliber. Do they not have a travel writer who is of the right
caliber who has had the most experience. Think about what positions you can fill since you
have been sort of in it from the beginning as a student. So good luck with becoming an
editorial writer.
