Hi, I am Jim Forgan, licensed school psychologist,
and today let's talk about ADHD and home schooling.
See I believe
kids who have ADHD
can't be homeschooling,
but there are a lot of factors that must be considered.
I think it's
a viable option
because kids with ADHD
oftentimes to learn differently.
So many kids with ADHD also have
learning disorders
and when they have those, they oftentimes don't fit the mold in a traditional
public school.
Therefore if the parent is capable of homeschooling
their child,
then it's oftentimes
the better fit academically for
the boy with ADHD or the girl with ADHD.
See I don't buy into these myths about homeschooling that
the homeschooling is socially
isolating,
the home school kids are weird,
the home school kids
are not going to have any friends. Dozens of just things that don't make a lot of
sense to me,
because my son is homeschooling.
He's in a home school program
and I know that it works
for us.
There are home school programs that are out there also
so that parents can't teach their own child,
they can have another homeschool parent
or home school
center or teacher to
teach their child.
And that's the case
for my wife and myself.
We could teach our summer both educators in the
you know mental health field,
but
we find that oftentimes easier and more productive for him
if somebody else is the teacher.
We are hands-on now because we pick out the curriculum
for his home school education.
We
have a great conference here in Florida
every year
sponsored by the Florida Parent Homeschool Association
and I always look forward to getting the catalog in the mail about their
homeschool conference because it's filled with great
seminars
and workshops
to help parents like myself
who are homeschooling their child
get up-to-date with the most beneficial strategies, techniques,
curriculum materials
to help their child.
So this year I'll be going to that homeschool conference I send
my son and myself up for an entrepreneurial track
that they're having this year
which are really excited about is the first time they've done this where
the parents and the child
go together to the seminar led by a homeschool student
formerly
homeschool student who is now a millionaire
and he's going to bring in some other
millionaires
that are young
and have been really successful
in developing
home business or a big business,
but he shared with homeschoolers and i
think this is great he's giving back
to the community.
So if you're interested in that
sign up for the two thousand twelve
Florida Homeschool Association
conference
here in Florida.
But one of the things that's great about that it is a real world,
because
my daughter is in high school who is already in trigonometry in algebra two and all those in
advance
mess that are great for certain careers.
But she can't balance a checkbook,
I have to teach of those things. She hasn't learned them in school
and so in real life what's more
important doing trigonometry
or be able to balance your checkbook which can manage your money.
In my boat,
I think most kids need
the functional skills of balancing a checkbook, we'll all
manage money and deal with money no matter what our ages,
no matter what our socioeconomic status is,
no matter what our race her culture is,
we're all dealing with money.
And in this seminar
my sons will get firsthand
a great experience about earning a real
money
so we're looking forward to this.
Homeschooling can be liable
and in my book raising boys with ADHD
I get a great interview
with Mrs Cindy Keynes
who runs a homeschool center in west palm beach Florida
called the academic link
and encourage you
to pick up a copy writebook and read their interview
and the whole section
about homeschooling
boys with ADHD.
There's some great tips in there but she gets questions you should ask
and in this blog post that I have on my website you'll see
some questions that you should ask yourself also.
Some of those questions include
I'll read this,
as the parent what kind of supports do I need,
where will I find
the cricket on resources,
do I need a homeschool group or
call-up or can I do this
myself,
what are the social outlets for my child with ADHD,
you can still be involved in public school activities, or
organized sports activities,
so those are out there you just have to reach out and get those,
and an addition are there online resources
for homeschooling.
Liberty university
has a great program
for homeschoolers,
and there are other ones as well
sunlight () you know it's very good,
switched on schoolhouse very good, so these are the kind of programs that you
can find out about in this florida homeschool conference
in your state probably has one too.
Another question you need to ask
yourself
is to have a dedicated space in my house to do this homeschooling, because it's
very important to have that dedicated
space
and numbered
ten out of this list
when my child work
for me, do we bud heads, or
can we work together
and so that's a very important question
to address
also,
but I know for a personal professional experience I work with a lot of
homeschoolers
and they are being successful when their kids are well balanced
they're happy, they're social, they are outgoing and
they're going to be successful
with those real life skills.
So homeschooling is a viable option.
