Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about
house training your dog. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can
visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So, we are talking about what to do when you catch
your dog in the act of going to the bathroom in your house. If you are employing good management
practices, then when your dog starts to have an accident you will be right there and you
will see what is happening. If you are with your dog and your dog starts to squat and
pee or squat and poo, what you want to do is make a very sudden and startle movement,
let them know, get their attention and then you want to scoop your dog up if they are
not already peeing or pooing. If they are already peeing and pooing and actually I employ
a method where I go right from behind and kind of squeeze their legs together, scoop
them up and carry them out. You do not want to take a dog by their collar that is in the
act of peeing or pooing and drag them out of your house. The only thing you are going
to do from doing this is drag the urine or the poo all the way to the door. That is going
to give you a much bigger mess to clean up. So it is very important that if you are vigilant
when your dog is loose in the house that you keep an eye on what is going on, what they
are doing; and as soon as they start to squat, you catch that ideally before they begin to
pee and poo and you scoop them up and take them outside of the house. If they have not
begun to urinate or defecate, then yes you can put their collar on and run them out.
Just be aware of whether or not they are already in the act. You don’t want to drag it through
your house.
