a
As a child growing up
I found myself learning a lot through
observation
i would watch my siblings and
see what worked and what didn't work for them and then learn from it.
I always let other people make 0:00:48.249,0:00:49.610 the first move
so that i can better assure my own success
and uh...
I event spent time watching tv trying to learn from the experiences of other
people on t_v_
as a result you could probably sum up my high school experience in about two
words
Zach
Morris
and yes
if you happened to catch that episode, there is the hidden track dubbed underneath
this
that is trying to manipulate your self-conscious to really like me
here, let me
just turn it up so that you can hear
(Wow, this guy is awesome. I want to share this video with all of my friends. I want to follow his blog on harrisonwilder.wordpress.com and like every post. I'm going
Well...you get it
so i've naturally found myself taking the same approach to
the bible.
i'm really thankful for the experiences of men and women
in the bible because i get to learn from them,
i feel like i have a valuable tool
that they didn't have access to
and that is
to be able to learn from their own successes and failures
now they're plenty of
people out there talking about how great these guys were in the bible
and the good leadership they modeled
but i thought it would be more fun for us to take a look at the examples of poor
leadership choices in the bible
you notice that i didn't
say poor leaders. it's too easy for us to
idolize leaders and say that either
everything was great about them or everything was bad about them
but the truth is that
all these leaders in the bible work people just like you and me
they had some good things going on and they had some bad things going on
Like King David
He was awesome
He was a man after god's heart
you know he also made some terrible choices
if nothing else i think that we should become convinced that imperfect leaders
like ourselves can still accomplish great things for god
all of us
happen potential to be used
as leaders. so why didn't bother to become better leaders at all?
why learn to make better choices
because god tells us to
and romans chapter twelve verve six says that's
since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us
each of us is exercise them accordingly
that prophecy
according to the proportion give
if
service in serving
nor he who teaches in his teaching
or he who exhorts, in his exhortation
or he who gives
with liberality. and he who leads
would do it
with diligence
The word diligence
means to contend earnestly for
as leaders
week earnestly seek to develop skills by studying god's word and
every other resources you can get your hands on.
it's being a
faithful steward
of the gift entrusted to you
okay so one more general idea and then we'll end this lecture
leadership development happens in four different quadrants
if we're going to be balanced in our leadership development and wholesome, we
must have some component of all four of these quadrants
#1 is classroom learning
so what we're doing right now where you can be sitting in a classroom trying to
learn something that way.The second thing is self-study
That's when you
you pick up a book or podcast or resource or something to get out there trying to
to learn leadership on your own
the third area of development is in mentorship relationships
some otherleader that's helping you develop your leadership
this a very important part of leadership development but the one that is most
important, and probably most neglected
is the quadrant of experience
experience is just getting out there and leading
Let me challenge you this summer's as you're taking this class to look for an
opportunity to go out and gain experience in leadership. Find something even if it's
small some place where you can exercise influence over other people go out there
and lead.
check out the assigned readings I posted on theCity
as well as some
discussion questions
let's just try to make the most of this online experience. i want you to share
your comments with others and try to read what other people are posting. i
think
the corporate
learning experiences is what's gonna be really valuable here. I'll
get the next lecture up to you later this week. Post any questions
that you have uh... that you would like me to address and i'll try to cover
them. you guys have a great week and we'll see you next
time
